I have a friend looking at a 2014 CRV with about 100k miles which spent its life in Maine. We live in NJ and deal with salt when it snows. Up north your winters are more severe and longer. Do they use salt up there and is corrosion a real issue. It is a Honda True Certified vehicle with 100days/5000 mile warranty so I would think it cant be terrible. I haven't put eyes on it yet may go look at it tommorrow

Are you sure it is a Honda True Certified vehicle from a Honda dealer? Here is what Honda says the warranty should be but your 2014 isn't covered according to this since it is over 7 model years old.

HondaTrue Certified Warranty

  • Less than seven model years old
  • Less than 80,000 miles on the odometer
  • 7 years, 100,000 miles of coverage on the powertrain
  • Limited non-powertrain coverage for 4 years/48,000 miles
  • 1-year/12,000-mile limited warranty if the new vehicle’s limited warranty has expired

Cars here in Maine don't wear out, they rust out. We are a card-carrying member of the rust belt... salt, calcium chloride, etc are a way of life up here and you'll find most roads and all highways being aggressively treated every time there is snow or the threat of snow or ice (which is often) for the better part of 4-5 months a year. And to make matters worse, most of our population is located along the coast where humidity and salt spray is omnipresent in the milder months. I buy used cars from down south... never from here.

Here is the Carfax. Also advertised as such:

A few nice things about the 2014 CR-V is:
* The 2.4L engine. It's the non-Direct Injection version of the K24
* The automatic transmission is the conventional 5 speed stepped shift automatic(pre CVT).
* They are easy to work on from brakes to differential.

MA is Massachusetts not Maine so a bit better of a choice but not really, go south, not north of NJ. What would make you even consider there's no salt use here or corrosion?

The most rotten vehicle I owned 07 MDX was used to launch boats from a small seaside town called Manchester by the Sea(depressing movie done there) . I could see not garaged and lived its life 50’ from ocean based on a google map of address of slip in glove box.

Be wary.

Can you see it on a lift? Can you see under the car?

New England cars usually aren't good to buy, especially since you're well south of the region. How much is this Maine example? Is it much cheaper than a local or southern car? The CR-V is the best-selling car in NJ, so there are plenty of better examples that you don't have to buy one from Maine.

Get some photo's of the undercarriage & suspension components. I bought a vehicle from OH once... I thought MO was bad...that was the biggest rust bucket I ever bought. Don't be teased by the lower mileage unless you've completely gone over it yourself.

Hey, if they are willing to give the full Honda True Certified warranty including the 12 month/12000 mile limited warranty on a vehicle which is 3 years and 20000 miles over the Honda True Certified program eligibility criteria, that's a plus I guess. The 112 point inspection and reconditioning included in that would also be a plus. Ask for the inspection report to see what was inspected and or corrected as that report is a part of the Honda True Certified warranty also.

It's almost an 11 year old car. I would not trust the "reconditioning" beyond vacuuming the carpets properly. It won't get an antifreeze flush, timing belt, ATF change, or anything else you'd want to have happen.

Massachusetts gets lots of mixed precip/ ice storms which are worse for salt than just straight snow like we sometimes get in Maine. The salt can be just as bad there, and I think they use the Mag Chloride that's even worse.

NJ doesn't do safety inspections anymore, unlike its neighbors, so I'd be concerned about it being a dumping ground for rusted out junk. Go look at it in person and stop being enamored by this warranty paper.

Sounds like there is a disconnect between warranty names. Some are describing a CPO but the OP lists something that seems typical of smaller lots--a quickie 30 day / 3,000 mile warranty that makes people sleep better at night. Odds are, nothing is going to pop up in that time, so the dealer likely self insures on these "warranties", at least that is my pure guess. [Of course, I also bet they would be more than willing to help you into a 3yr/50k warranty. Just roll the cost into the finance amount and it's only a few dollars more per month for peace of mind!]
