Used Truck shopping...maybe

A couple of potentials here, thoughts?

06 Tundra. 178K miles, way cheaper and pretty clean.

The 2006 with 178K is the one I would get. Looks very well maintained. 178K is nothing on one of those trucks. Shocks, brakes, tires and wheel bearings are all wear items but point is,this owner already took care of them so you don't have to. The original shocks on mine lasted 155K.

Would the 4 tire dually not have a huge advantage in sway all things equal to a SRW pickup?

That first Tundra is a great looking truck, but $17K seems nuts to me. I bet it needs a timing belt too. Even with fully documented history, $17K is steep. Great color and options though.

Second Tundra appears to be sold.

That Super Duty would be nice if it was stock. It's going to be a pain loading anything in that truck and the length might get annoying unless you actually need it. Also more money for tires, brakes, etc. A stock, shorter configuration of that truck would be great.

Did you check Blue Book on it? Where does the $17,000.00 come from?

On the timing belt it's not enough to know how many miles it was done at.
There is an age component to them as well, typically 10 years is max recommended age.
Make sure you find out what date it was done.

update on those 3:

- The '06 w/ 178K is sold.

- I did see the '06 with 115K in person. No red flags, drove straight, quiet, etc. Only issues I noticed were 2 tires need replacing and it's hard to tell but if you look at the pic of the right side of the truck, there is a large dent on the bed just ahead of the wheelwell. Overall though pretty good shape. Timing belt done at 71K, not sure on date. He mentioned he has a folder full of paperwork on it. He did seem pretty set on the 17K price and while it's a good example of a Tundra, I have a tough time paying 4K over blue book for anything! I was thinking of offering 14K and seeing his response.

- The '01 V10 is out! Looked at it last night, the paint job was marginal, had some run off. Tires had decent tread but were dry rotting and 6 years old, so there is 1K+ right there. But the deal breaker was after I drove it and let it idle, there was a noise coming from the motor. I believe it was an exhaust leak but no way to tell right then. Just not worth the trouble to me!

Couple of new ones I'm interested in:

- Another V10, this one is a 2002 with only 99K miles and looks clean from what I can see. Ran the vin, no red flags. Also lifted, why does everyone lift these? But at least the components seem quality, saw some bilstein shocks in there and tires are relatively new. He's asking 13K, but did say he's flexible. https://offerup.com/item/detail/964194359

- A 2004 Tundra. This one has 199K miles and he's only asking 8K. Waiting to hear back on more details but says he's owned 15 years.

-2012 Titan with 98K miles. Seems clean haven't looked as it's far away from me. I would try to negotiate down a bit either way, shooting for more like 16K instead of 19.

Off-topic but - what happened to your Ram?

No worries, it's relevant here. One thing that's going to happen moving up North is that we will be a one income household now. We decided we should try and eliminate some debt and one of those options was to sell the Ram. However, I thought there's no way they would give me what I want. Much to my surprise, an Autonation dealer here in Phx offered us $2000 more than what we paid for it last year, I couldn't believe it. So now, we have eliminated that debt and monthly payment. I have money in the bank, so that's why I'm looking to buy cash for something reasonable. At the price range I'm looking at, we'll be getting out of 14-16K of debt total.

Man these prices! 😲

Sorry I just can't see spending $8-$9.4k on a vehicle with 200k+ miles that is 16 years old.

That blue Tundra is the most offensive, $4k over bluebook and it has $2k of body damage to the bed?

Looking at all these high priced used trucks has me wanting to suggest a brand new truck. For example, a new low trim RAM 4 door 4x4, a chevrolet custom 4x4 4 door, even some basic F150s are starting to be listed around 30k again. This will become more common now that production is flowing. Advantages of warranty, cheap financing, zero maintenance, better MPG, starts to make sense to spend double for new.
