My aunt finally got her replacement of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee I had sold her. It was just an in-between car until she decided on what to buy. She needed something that was good for commuting, parking, road trips, off-road, and could tow well. The Grand Cherokee was not cutting it in the towing department and buying a new one was uncertain as to if it would be up to the task.
Last year we looked at a new 2023 Lexus GX460 and the tech was an absolute dinosaur and the V8 was underpowered. I'm sure it's one of the best apocalypse ready vehicles with incredible reliability especially all these years of this model being in service, but when you spend that kind of coin on a new car, it needs to be exactly what you want.
She had reservations in at 3 different Lexus dealers for a new 2024 Lexus GX550 for months earlier this year. Somewhere around 150-250 people ahead of her in line. I called a 4th dealer since they had one listed on AutoTrader but it was just a sales gimmick. However, they did say they had one coming that was able to be reserved for some reason. Turns out it was the exact spec and color she wanted, so done-deal, it was reserved. Unfortunately all new GX's were placed on a QA hold at the Long Beach port for a couple months, supposedly for something with the bolts on the hood? Not sure we understand. Either way it showed up in June and the rest is history.
It's a Premium+ model with optional HUD, dashcam (factory), and roof rack. An absolute tank. It drives like a truck but rides like a car. Parks easy and fits in the garage. Tows like an absolute beast with all the power one could need (twin turbo V6). Super comfortable and great materials. 2,600 miles so far. I put 120 miles on it yesterday and it was an absolute joy to drive. She couldn't be happier. We can't wait to get this thing out on the 4x4 trails and see what it can do. Just like with the Grand Cherokee, it's gonna see some pretty major off-roading. Will have to wait until this fall/winter though.
