I haven't take a valve cover off since a valve job on a 91 grand am 4cyl. I just don't go through the trouble to remove it just to look.

+1. We had a 91Ranger with 354K (miles) and never had the VC off. What about oil fill hole PICs?

+1. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I don't mess with valve covers unless they are leaking.

This was taken about 2 years ago. Unknown service history. I had recently began running Pennzoil synthetics and using kreen. My f150 I think it had 130k on it at the time

In all the post Kreen cleanup pics I've seen you can see small patches of varnish just like yours. Like it was manually scraped. The varnish coating is evenly distributed throughout the engine surface in regular pictures. IMO that means it was removing varnish rapidly and subsequent kreenings should remove the thicker areas that are left.

Looks very clean, Tig. I once had the valve cover off the Escort at about 225,000 miles... the commuter car that we used 0W20 Mobil 1 in for its entire life with 20K oci's.
I was surprised at its cleanliness since maintenance had always been a back-burner priority on that car... the entire area was clean with what I would call a light yellow/gold stain.

The reason I had the valve cover off.... the valve cover gasket suddenly squirted out the side just like shooting a pumpkin seed out. After 225,000 miles went from no oil leaks or usage to just drizzling oil - all at once. Maybe the Mobil 1 was too slippery, making it shoot out!

Anyway, a new valve cover gasket, and a couple of minutes spinning the hold down nuts and I was on my way.
