Surprise to me, too, when I got the email.
I was going to wait until I ran out of my stash of filters, and THEN let them do a couple of OCs.

AFAIK, the 820 is the only one that has been talked about with media tear issues. You are probably safe!

Understood about the paranoia. I know that some of it is justified, but I also have to laugh when reading some of the things on here. Good entertainment.

I've used the FL820s on an explorer, and my mustang many times. While I've never cut them open, i've never had an issue. If there is any doubt though, like others are saying pick up some MC oil and an air filter.

I have about $100 in reward money built up over many years.
Great idea about buying oil. Never thought of buying oil from Ford. Wish they had full synthetic, but the MC Blend is good stuff, from what I have seen here.
Gonna get all three wiper blades also. Should have no problem spending all of it.
Need shocks, but I won't have the dealer do any more wrenching. Have a friend that was their main mechanic, who now has his own shop. I trust him, so he will do all future wrench work on the Ford.

Thanks for the ideas!

MOST OF THESE STORY YOU HEARD FROM THESE PEOPLES ABOUT FILTER BEING TORN OR DAMAGE, ARE ETHER FAKE !!!! OR MAKE UP [censored], OR USER FAULT, that BEING CHEAP AND over extent the filter and using way pass their life of the filter, or damage during cut open the filter, then blame everything on the filter. Its just a peggy plaint dumb to me. I pity the fool.

Good points. I think I will go ahead and get an OC with the 820 filter.
I am sure some problems are legit, but others may be due to the reasons you list. This Ford has also had many 820's on it in the past.
Thanks.

Since you asked, for a reasonable 6 month 5-6k mi. oci, I would. One recently posted recently HERE went farther over slightly less time and looked good.

Yep, that was ran on my truck. Car51 cut & posted it for me. I'm 100% satisfied with the way it looked, I don't think you could've asked for much better from a filter I spent less than $4 on at Walmart! I have a Tough Guard TG2 that was ran on the same truck for 7,213 miles that'll be going to car51 soon enough.

To OP: Use the FL-820S with confidence. If it really bothers you that bad then request an FL-500S. It will fit & work just fine & they tend to look better than their big brother 820.

Thanks to you and the rest of the BITOGers. This is the kind of info I was looking for to cancel out my perception from all the torn-media posts that the 820 was a blown engine waiting to happen.

I shall sleep good now!

You're doing the TG2 next? That is great. I was planning on switching from the 820s to the TG2 on the F150 since its oil change is due here really soon. Hopefully you get it into car51 before I decide to change the oil lol

x2 OP using FL820s with confidence. My 5.4 modular has had no complaints using it

I'm pretty sure they do make a full synthetic. I had my Mustang in one time for inspection/emissions and I was lazy and asked them to change the oil (I'm sorry guys, it was really cold out, and I needed a new drain bolt and... I know no excuses I felt bad about it too). I think it was something like $9 a quart. That said I believe most 5w20 MC blends do pretty well in most fords from a UOA point of view.

Yes, there is a full synthetic Motorcraft oil that you can get from the Ford dealership.

If that was true, then we would constantly hear of reported torn/damaged oil filters. But that whole torn media thing all started about 2 years ago out of the blue. I highly doubt that all of a sudden everyone was causing the damage during cutting the filter open or faking the torn media or using the filters too long. Something changed at Purolator to cause the issue, it's not 'user related'. If it was 'user related' we would have been seeing similar reports for the past 10+ years - which we haven't.

I just saw my last post here..I meant Stay away from purolater.. The only purolater made filter i would use in a pinch on a Ford engine is the Motorcraft..They are on millions of fords and although not a great filter by any means most seem to be ok.

Well, I had Ford do the OC, and picked up some oil with the extra money.
After this, it is back to doing my own OCs, and using synthetic media filters.

Sounds good what filter will you be using? Are you having problems with the Motorcraft.. I don't like their lack of threads where they connect to the engine..

Did you at least provide them with a good filter? Cause otherwise it got a Tearolator.

Red heads are awsome. Even if their step children lol.
I think you might be spending too much time on this sight. Letting all the ocd's get into your head. I wouldn't worry about that perfectly fine fl 820.

Nick, I thought about giving them one of my Puro Synthetic filters I bought on close-out, but didn't.
It has an 820 installed. Should be good for a short OCI.

Will go back to doing my own in Oct/Nov, using Ultra/M1/Amsoil filters.

COD - When I do it myself, I will be using a Puro Synth filter. I have 2 left from a closeout buy.
After that, probably M1/Amsoil/Ultra or a regular Wix.

No problem with Motorcraft. Just all the talk on here about tears had me concerned.
This one won't even be in for 5k miles, so should be OK. I don't do any WOT driving with this Explorer!
smile.gif

Gonna take it off in October to try to get my OCI to fall/spring (or fall only for extended OCI), instead of summer/winter like it is now. FEBRUARY oil change is no fun in Illinois!
