C&P Pictures of Ford FL-820S purchased from Walmart about 12/2024. Looks like it has some wrinkles on the bottom plate. The pleat spacing could be better, running them for warranty on 7.3 Godzilla. I had Ford 5w-20 in it over the winter, lots of cold starts and short 5-7 mile trips. It was mostly by accident because the jugs look so similar. My OCI is short, only ran it about 4000 miles. Try to change it no more than 5000 miles. Put another FL-820S and Ford 5w-30 in it for summer. I know Ford says 5w-30 but figured the 5w-20 wouldn't hurt when my oil isn't reaching temp very often on short winter trips after I already had it in the truck. Ford also ran 5w-20 in all their trucks until recently. I used a band saw to cut open the filter, so the large metal chucks are from the cutting. This website has made me OCD about oil filters, I'll probably order a filter cutting tool now because I'm too curious.

Different filter observation, When I was in Walmart just a few days ago shopping for an FL1A, April 2025, it looked like the Mobile 1 filters were the best physical construction to my untrained eye. The Ford FL1A and Fram XG8A felt very cheap and thin, they had the stamped slots rather than round holes on the inside. The Mobile 1 301A felt heavy and it looked to have a coil spring bypass valve at the bottom along with round interior holes. The Mobile 1 301A was also a Made in the USA filter, it seems like any filter part number could come from anywhere these days. Some folks have noted Mobile 1s coming from Vietnam and China with very good quality. The Ford FL1A had a black ABPV, which I assumed it wasn't silicone. I went with the Mobile 1 301A for a vintage Ford FE application and Vavoline VR-1 10w-30. I used to like the Fram FE line, but they were already phased out at the local Walmat, the new Purolator filters felt pretty light and not really impressive compared to the Mobile 1. It looks like a coil spring at the bottom of the Mobile 1 so that along with the heavy weight pushed me towards it. It also noted synthetic media blend on the Mobile 1, so it felt about equivalent to the XG8A Fram alternative in that area.

Maybe it is wroth noting, both of the FL-820S appeared to have the front thread side bypass setup. I'm still a bit of a novice in the ways of oil filter obsession...

Doesn't matter because the bypass valve isn't built into the leaf spring, and the leaf spring on this filter doesn't seal a center hole on the end cap where the leaf spring sits.

If they ever make this filter without messy glue and no tear report issue, I go back to this in a heart beat, I like keep all motorcraft on my cobra .

Same thing with Fram ultra.

Don't hold your breath … once oil filters go down the garbage hole they don't seem to ever come back. That's why filter Whack-A-Mole exists.

You can always use the Ford Racing one.
Between my 3 vehicles that take the 820s filter, I have put over 500K miles on them without any internal engine issues.
I did buy a couple of the ford racing version ones to try on the GT500 and the Lightning engined truck this year, they are spendy.

I ordered a case on accident. Used one on my Mustang the last oil change.
