"Truck and SUV" synthetic oil?!

What, exactly, does it mean when an oil is labeled "truck and suv"? I see Mobil 1 oils labeled as such, and my local walmart has some Quaker State 10W40 Truck and 4x4 on clearance for $2 a quart. So, what makes this specific for use in a truck? I mean, an engines an engine, right?

My take on synthetic Truck & SUV oils? It helps Joe Avg., who knows nothing about oil, select a very good oil for his pickup. The various synthetic Truck & SUV oils on the market ARE good oils, whether used in a pickup or a car.

Not everyone cares about oil the way we BITOGers do.
 
I figured that there wouldn't be a difference. I ask because I drive a car, not a truck. I think I'll pick up the clearance oil then. $2 a quart for Quaker State Synthetic seems to be a good buy.

It's a fine oil and QS obviously knows how to keep everything in suspension. The bottoms of their clear jugs don't ever seem to have anything that has fallen out of suspension in them. I just don't think the marketing worked well for them. You can't seem to give the stuff away. Anyone interested in some 5qt jugs???

Ok...compared to what? Reading marketing material doesn't always give a clear picture. Most would assume, such as you apparently did, that it means more AO than regular Mobil-1 5w-30. But is does not say that. It just says it contains more AO. Many oils can make that claim without directly comparing it to nothing. Personally, I have a hunch that the oil is no different than non T&SUV 5w-30, and I believe the T&SUV label is just a marketing ploy.

It may be a marketing ploy, maybe not. Mobil is usually on the slow side to expand their offerings. They are probably one of the most conservative companies in the world and have a huge target on their back to be wary of. As far as I have seen, they are unique from many of their key competitors in regards to truthfully and accurately claiming specs they actually have. Even with that, I understand your desire for proof. Maybe VOAs would help? Maybe their 800 number would provide additional clarification beyond what is written on their website?

I'd like to see a scented and dyed-pink oil in a lavender bottle marketed to soccer-moms..."Minivan Blend". MINIMAL burn-off and extended ocis....like a light HDEO, but it would have to be good for short trips too.
 
You should keep a couple of quarts of SUV oil in your car at all times this winter. If you get stuck in the snow, just pour the oil in and you can drive right out of your problem. Be sure to get the 4X4 Suv oil. Also remember it will be cold outside, so don't get too much viscosity, just a little bit will do. Be sure that when you take your extra SUV oil that you also take along some Prolong. If you get stuck so bad that the SUV oil can't get you out of the ditch you drove into you can always pour the Prolong down your pants and run around in circles to keep warm until the tow truck arrives. Be sure to save some of the Prolong to tip the tow truck driver. Just remember the people that bring you all these wonderful products thank you for helping them make a living without have to get a job.
