It was spec'd for a 5W20 oil; I was simply letting him know that 0W20 oil carries the same hths spec despite the "0W" part, because it does--and to alleviate some of the inevitable "that's to thin" (which of course has already started), because it's just as "thick" as what's spec'd for the vehicle.

Thanks for the varied responses. The engine spec is for 5W20. The engine has an oil to water heat exchanger (oil cooler) mounted above the oil filter. Most of the mileage of the motorhome is run up by trips at least 50 miles. However it does see quite a few short trips-15 minute to half hour. It sees some hot summer temperatures. It gets about 6000 miles per year of use.

The early ecoboost was originally spec'd 5w20 then was changed to 5w30. and the test was in the first year of the ecoboost which would have been a 5w20 spec'd engine and used Motorcraft 5w20 syn-blend for the torture test, because that was factory fill.

I suspect because of fuel dilution associated with short trips many "real world" driven ecoboost will see daily. my guess would be that the 5w30 more than likely shears to a 20wt very soon in that engine under short trip and stop and go applications, thus the switch to 5w30 for that engine.

The 20 grade most likely did some shearing too then. I like the way you quoted "real world", its a lot different than any kind of testing a mfg does. "Real world" testing takes years to accomplish, that's when the real issues, if any begin to pop up.

I'd ask the OP the following questions:

1) What year is the motor home and chassis (F350, F450, etc).

2) What, for sure, is the factory spec'ed oil. The V10s
3) How many miles are on the engine?

My opinion is that this falls under the "as thick as necessary" clause. Motor homes work pretty hard and when they run, they usually run long distances so the warmup issue of a short hopper isn't a factor. Knowing most motor homes are run hard and are always carrying a load, the oil temp is likely to be higher than say an F350 that runs unloaded 90 percent of the time. For that reason, if it were mine, I'd have at least a shear resistant 5W30 (if not a 10W30) in it. I wouldn't argue to hard against a 5W40, especially if I could hook up a ScanGage and read oil temp and pressure. If OT was as high as I think it might be, a 40 grade would be fully justified.

All that said, I think this engine may well be able still still live a long and happy life on a good 20 grade (5W or 0W). But like some here like to say, there isn't much "headroom" left for those Arizona desert moments when you are flying to get thru the monotonous desertscape. Maybe with a full load of people, food, adult beverages and water tanks.
 
09 E450 with about 36K miles. I've always used Mobil 1 5W20.

As this motorhome is 24' and quite a bit under capacity for the chassis, I'm not inclined to go more viscous oil than the spec of 5W20. I'm also a very easy driver, roll at about 58 MPH and don't push the engine harder than necessary.

The answers in this thread only confirm my contradictory thoughts. I like a margin of safety, and the Mobil 1 is readily available. But I also have strong suspicion the Toyota oil would serve just fine.

This pretty much sums up my own thoughts as well. It'll work well, I just wouldn't go out of my way to source it since it's harder to find and more expensive. Of course, if you like just having 1 oil on-hand for 2 vehicles, then you can use it no problem.

Piles of engines? You're at it again Mark. Show me just one thread that I mentioned piles of engines? It doesn't exist, just like the test results you claimed were in that 2004 Ford article for the test I was thinking about the other day. You did some crafty side stepping on that one. We all know Ford claims to have tested the daylights out of the Eco-boost, so that's nothing new. Unfortunately the real world testing is done by the consumer it takes years to accomplish, no automaker has the time. That was my point, hopefully presented a bit more clearer for you? It seems you want to fight over that now.

Maybe Ford realized in this particular series of tests for their Eco-boost a 30 grade oil was better suited for the engine? What's the problem? Good for Ford, they're still tops in my book. Maybe in that application the 30 grade oil that is supposed to shear to a 20 grade oil is still a better choice. It still strikes me as odd if a 30 grade is going to shear to a 20 grade why not just stick with a 20 grade oil right from the beginning? Obviously there's a bit more to it.

The point is the 20 grade oil isn't the Holy Grail you make it out to be, and that Ford made it out to be in your 2004 article. I have to go real slow with you I guess, and spell it all out. Yes I like Fords I've owned them for many, many years. I like my Jeep too in spite of what they spec for it. LOL Time for dinner!

I want to use the Toyota oil in my Toyota. I think it's perfectly appropriate for the kind of driving I do with it. The cost by the case is only a little more than the Mobil 1, and I pick up quite a bit at a time. It would be nice to have one oil to draw from. I already have an ATV and motorcycle which have their own unique oil requirements.

I also like to drive for fuel economy. I'm sure the oil is tiny influence, but with low cruising speed, keen eye on tire inflation etc. I do get relatively good fuel economy out of the E450 (10.1 MPG on last trip to southern Utah).

Then you denied Fords testing took place

Then you said it was flawed

Then you say only real world testing over years counts

Now you say that after over a decade of real world testing on real fords there have not been any issues
