Hello everyone. I am working on a school project where we are analyzing some oils for aromatic content, and we are comparing them to some well known engine oils. The problem is, I cannot find published numbers anywhere for the total aromatic content of any of these oils. I e-mailed Castrol, but they gave me the run around about not publishing formulations. Does anyone know where I could find this information if its available?

Do you have any access to a lab with an NMR? Have the oils run and look for peaks in the aromatic region. You can do an integration of peaks between aliphatic and aromatic. Any college or university will have one of these and you might get some free runs if they are interested in your project.
Our lab has 3 NMR's, but the tech who runs the lab is out of town for the next two weeks, so I was trying to do some preliminary work. We are working on another way to detect aromatics, and I wanted to see if it was also useful for quantitation if I could find published numbers for the concentrations of aromatics.
How about quantitative ir at a particular band? Or even UV spectroscopy?
