Too late to switch to synth after 85k miles?

Im fine with dino oci's every 5k, and the engines are kept clean with b12 and seafoam crankcase cleanings so I wouldnt believe I'd have problems with deposits breaking off from the gaskets with synth. The main reason I wondered about switching to synth is because I'd like 10k-15k mile oci's. Thanks to everyone for your replies.

I started using synthetic at a little past 100K miles and I'm now approaching 195K. I do have some minor leakage on the oil pan gasket, but most of the Chrysler 2.7 V6 develop some oil pan gasket leakage regardless of what oil is used.

So, no issues here from switching to synthetic.

My Toyota Truck had 300K on it when I switched from 3K oil changes with dino to 6K changes with synthetic. Over 600K on it now with no issues at all.

Wow. I thought I was pretty good to get 247K out of my Toyota truck. How have you managed to get over 600K out of yours?

I was thinking the same thing, 600K?

I've never had any issues throwing synthetic in a higher mileage vehicle causing or creating problems that weren't there already...

However, over time, synthetic (PAO-based) HAS seemed to help reduce oil-consumption on my Saturn SL2 mobile-oil-furnace-unit.

Nick, any decrease in mileage since there's no more oil consumption? I have some consumption but its normal for the engine. I wouldnt want to put a high mileage oil in mine if it would mean a decrease in mileage due to higher viscosity, but if I could find a synth oil that wouldnt burn off and would still get the same mileage then that would be another minor benefit of switching to synth. If not though I dont mind topping off either way.

Toyotas can go a long time when treated right. I have seen several online accounts of toyota drivers saying they made it to 800k.

No. But I did notice a drop off a about couple of miles per gallon when I went from GC 0W-30 to M1 0W-40. But there seems to be little if any difference between between the M1 10W-40 HM and the 0W-40, but that oil had been in there a while (I get about 34mpg-38mpg on the highway)...

In any case, it looks like Mobil1's 10W-30 HM oil pours at about -54F and it seems only marginally thicker than any other 10W-30 at temp...

But if consumption isn't really an issue, you could use any synthetic...

Thanks again to everyone for your help. Im considering mobil1 5w30 unless I find something better for around the same price. Walkmart has 5qt jugs of it for $19.

My mailman's Tacoma just passed the 400K mark. I don't know of any miles that are rougher than a mailroute. As far as the miles on my truck, they aren't that high. I see numerous Toyota trucks that have more miles than mine and are still rolling. I had to laugh when some guy who has never owned one made the statement that they won't last. His ignorance of Toyotas trucks was obviousThere isn't any secret to getting many miles out of a Toyota truck. Do your maintenance like clockwork and don't try to follow the "normal" service schedule. Even when I ran dino oil it was changed like clockwork at 3K miles. The coolant got changed once a year without a drop of the Toyota red acid being used. The valves get adjusted once a year. The trans, diffs and transfer case get serviced every 30K. If a seal leaks I fix it immediately. It has the original bottom-end and has not been worked on. I have had the head off to perform a valve-job due to a rotten head gasket and worn valve seals. No other engine work has been done and it runs on Schaeffer 9000 series usually out to about 5K miles between intervals. I don't go any farther with the intervals simply becouse it does alot of idling around my farm. It's had 4 clutches in 600K miles and one flywheel. I put bearings in the 5spd at 400K becouse they were noisey-no gears were needed. I couldn't tell you how many tune-ups,filters and brakes that I have done to it. The bed of the truck is rusted out(normal for an east coast truck) but the cab is still tight with no air or water leaks. It has no real value but to me it is irreplaceable. It has never left me on the side of the road.
Toyota still builds one of the longest lasting trucks made and my mailman's Tacoma is an example of that. I don't care for how the Tacomas seem to be getting more bloated with each model change but there's no argueing the quality put in their trucks. They will last if the service is done as it should be. I am obsessive about the maintenance on everything I own and I don't generally get rid of a vehicle until I have got my money out of them. You loose to badly to trade every 3-5 years. I would rather take the money it costs to trade constantly and put it in something that's going to appreciate in value. But that's just me.
