thoughts on QS ultimate Durability

Just put in Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5W30 in my wifes Lexus RX and noticed right away how quiet the engies is. A few oils over the last 12 years in this car has grabbed my attention for how quiet it is like this oil has.

I am noticing this lately about Quaker State oils. Not eerie quiet, just quieter at idle, cruising & WOT!

from UOA evidence, Quaker State Ultimate Durability is excellent. I will definitely look out for it once my stash is depleted in .... 3-4 years LOL

This is the correct answer. Pennzoil leans more toward cleaning additives.

AW additives and cleaning additives are in constant competition. The AW tries to cling to the metal parts and be a sacrificial boundry, and the cleaing adds try to pull things off of the metal parts and suspend them. If you have high amounts of both, the will continually try to cancel each other out.

Well what really caught my attention with this oil is the price more than anything else. $21 for a quality 0W20 is an excellent deal imo. Saw it on a recent trip to a few Walmarts in the US and bought up whatever was left on their shelves.

My only beef is, Quaker State Ultimate Durability 0W20 in 5qt containers isn't available at all Walmart locations, which is a bit of head scratcher.

I have noticed, in my Honda's K24, that various Pennzoil synthetic products (Pennzoil Platinum 0W-20 and 5W-20, and Pennzoil Ultra 5W-20) seem to allow/create more engine noise than other oils. The general "din" from the engine, the mechanical noises, are much more apparent. The engine makes noises with these oils that it doesn't make with other oils. One of the quietest oil I've used in it is Mobil 1 0W-20.

Can it me that the type of additives allow or contribute to engine noise? I have not yet tried Quaker State Ultimate Durability in it, but am considering it. I wonder if Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5W-20 would be significantly quieter in the car than the Pennzoil synthetics I've been using.

I'm confused on QS. Which one is their high-mileage oil? I know Defy is supposed to be now, but what was it before -- Enhanced Durability, Ultimate, or some other product that's gone now? Because they don't mention any High Mileage oil, labeled as such, on their website.

I'm currently using the Quaker State Ultimate Durability in my old lady's windstar. So far she's put 10000kms on the oil and the engine is just as quiet as the day I put it in. I'm going to run it roughly 16000kms(10000 miles). Her van is basically 95% highway miles so I'm not concerned that the oil is being beat up too badly.
I bought 4 jugs of it in the 5w-20 flavour when it was on sale everywhere. For 26 bucks out the door it was a deal I couldn't pass up. The pp went on sale the next week,so my stash got alot bigger.
I think this oil is one of the best bang for the buck oils out there.
I've noticed that engines tend to get noisier when the oil is due for a change, but her van is still quiet as a church mouse. Not scientic I know, just an observation.
And tig is doing 10000 mile intervals in his engines with mobil 1 and I feel this oil is equal to mobil 1 for less money, and his sig line shows high miles at his 10000 mike intervals,so I'm confident in my oci.
And like I said this van is basically all highway miles, which isn't hard on oil.

Seriously?
Wow...I'd like to hear this.
Explain.

Shear, even my 5.5hp Honda compressor engines become more noticeable. My Harley is the worst offender though. After about 3000 miles the top end gets a lot more noisy.
My 750 Honda shadow v-twin also gets louder, the valve train starts tapping, that happens at around 2000 miles though. I think the oil gets beat up pretty quick due to being a shared sump.
Answer your question.

While i have not done any UOA from using Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5w20 in the past, I have noticed that close to the 3,000 mile mark on my direct-injected engine, the engine was noisier than during the first 2,000 miles of having the oil in the engine.

I'm on a Castrol Edge hook right now, but when I'm done using my CE supply (after my next oil change) i plan on using Quaker State Ultimate Durability again, but this time a 5w30 and see if the engine gets noisier or not when it gets close to the 3,000 mile mark.

My car has had Pennzoil 5w30 conventional in it before and the car ran great throughout the entire OCI before I put in Castrol Edge.

Oil clearly changes as it ages. I also understand that it lays down an anti wear additive.

My vehicle running Quaker State 5w30 is currently at 3.5k miles on it and feels peppier than it did at the beginning.

Could it be due to shear and the fact the engine calls for 5w20?

I just passed the 3000 mark with my fill of 5w30 Quaker State Ultimate Durability and my 2.2 Ecotec is noticeably smoother and quieter than when I initially put it in. Could be the oil got broken in, lol. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to change it when the OLM goes off or just reset the OLM and run it for two intervals (should be 10,000 or so miles).

Either way, after the Quaker State Ultimate Durability I've got 2x changes of QS green bottle to go in. I have decided to go conventional since I don't do extended drains. Got a case from NAPA for about $25, couldn't pass it up.

I would, but still under warranty. Toyota wants 5k OCI.

In a 2011? I thought they switched to 10,000 mile interval`s?

QS DEFY is their new High Mileage oil, it is also a semi-synthetic blend. Enhanced Durability is now their Non High Mileage version of a semi-synthetic blend. Before DEFY was made Enhanced durability was sold in a red bottle and was advertised as syn blend that was for High Mileage vehicles. The difference between the old enhanced durability and the new DEFY is the "extra zinc" its advertised as having. Since High Mileage vehicles can all tolerate the extra zinc there was no need for 2 high mileage oils with the only difference being the zinc content. so they changed Enhanced durability to a Non high mileage oil that is still a semi-synthetic blend.

They did on the I-4's

Yes, however the 10k OCIs are for Lexus vehicles sold in the US only. Canadians are required to do 5k OCIs

As the others have stated, this is an excellent motor oil! I ran it recently in my 1998 F150 for a 10,000 OCI. Around 280 K miles on the engine at that time and only used one quart of makeup oil. It's hard to beat the value on this one.

Surfing the oil aisle today, I notice that Quaker State Ultimate Durability in 5W-20 has the ACEA A5 rating. All other 20 grades that I saw were A1.

I understand that the A5 rating (which all the 30 grades had) requires an HTHS of at least 2.9. Quaker State Ultimate Durability's admittedly old PDS shows an HTHS of 2.64. The current formulation of Quaker State Ultimate Durability in 5W-20 must have an HTHS of at least 2.9, right, to have A5 on the bottle?

If that's true I just found my KIA oil! But I thought a 2.9 HTHS was a minimum for a 30 grade, but I guess a 20 just has to be at least 2.6, 2.9 may still be acceptable for a 20?

A thicker oil is harder for the oil pump to pump so it adds drag to the engine. You must really know your vehicle,I figured going up a single grade would be imperceptible however I have heard and read of that before.
And you are likely right in your assumption that the 5w30 sheared making pumping losses less prevalent thereby making the engine feel peppier.
