I've stopped changing my own oil on the Saturn. Instead, I have begun taking it in for oil changes every 3,000 miles.

Why?

1) I hate changing oil-- it's dirty, time consuming and hardly rewarding. There's no instant gratification to it, unlike other auto work.

2) I now live in an apartment complex, so there's no driveway to work on the car. The apartment complex prohibits vehicle maintenance.

3) Perks with a DIFM oil change. At some shops, you get free top-offs, which is important for us Saturn owners

. If I go to the dealer, they do a mini-detail (wash and vacuum) which saves me from having to spend money at the car wash. Some oil change specials now include tire rotations, which is also nice since I hate doing tire work.

4) Cost. With the economy, chain auto shops and dealers are hurting for business. Most shops and dealers near me charge $19.99, which is only a few dollars more than the cost of a 5 qt and filter combination. Here's a sample of the shops around me and their oil change prices:

1) Sears: $19.99 for Valvoline Conventional and Powerflo Filter (Almost always have this promotional price)
2) Firestone: $19.99 for Kendall Liquid Titanium Blend and Champs Filter (Almost always have this price)
3) Cadillac dealer: $19.99 for Kendall Liquid Titanium Blend and AC Delco Filter, plus free car wash.
4) Goodyear Auto Center: $19.99 for Valvoline Conventional

Yes, I realize that these places are looking for work when you bring your car in. But to my surprise, none of these shops have upsold me any unneeded work. In fact, the only shop that upsold me work was the Cadillac dealer, but the work needed was legitimate and they didn't even push it. I have found that if you talk with the technician who is working on the car and have him realize that you are somewhat car-savvy, you'll eliminate many issues. Especially if you watch the tech while they work on your car, you will virtually eliminate the horror stories about oil change screw-ups.

So, those are the reasons why I haven't changed the oil in my Saturn in quite some time. Has anyone else stopped changing their own oil? Has anyone else recently converted to having their oil changed due to the low prices?

Discuss.

I do my own----because:

1. I almost always enjoy it.

2. Time is consumed...but it is well-spent.

3. Time is saved. I can do it much quicker than I can drive to anyplace, have it done, and drive back.

4. I know I'm doing it right.

5. It gives me the chance to examine the undercarriage.

6. I can still do it for $10-15 less than most places charge, and with 13 motor vehicles, several lawn mowers, four boats and 3 tractors, it really adds up to significant savings.

I have to pay shop labor rates to have my oil changed, but it's nice just to drop off my truck and have it done instead of me crawling under and getting all dirty and sweaty.

Hey, why else do you think I often extended the oil change intervals on the Saturn?

You mean you don't hand one of the techs $10 and have him do it on his lunch break?

I was in the auto repair business 30 or so years.I don't do my own oil changes or tire rotations.I supply the oil and filter and hang over their heads while it gets done.Last time in I had my own Amsoil Severe Gear lube for the differential. They drain and refilled mine for free while oil was draining. It was a Quick Lube center at a local car wash. But back to oil changes. Its messy and you got to dispose of old oil. I don't mine paying to have it done.Had Chrysler dealer do my dually a few weeks back with my own oil/filter.Charged me $13 bucks labor.Topped off my fliuds and set air psi in 6 tires for me.Can't beat it.

LOL that is me too! It is SO hard to wait for the Pilot to hit the 15% mark on the OLM. I have had to change it early and reset the OLM at 50% a few times!

I have been thinking the same thing lately, it's just a total waste of my time.

There's a quick lube place not far from me, it's privately owned and the guys been there forever, been thinking more and more about just having him do it. Use PYB 5w-30 w/pennzoil filter and call it good!!!!!

I don't do mine. Condo Board technically prohibits working on cars (although I don't think anyone would actually stop me), but the main reason is b/c my car is a nightmare to change oil on - oil filter is almost un-reachable.

I've found a QL (Oil Changers) that I trust, and seems to do good work w/o pushy up-sells, plus I like the oil they use (Petro-Canada), so it works for me. I still get 'staisfaction' out of knowing I've had the oil changed, so I really don't feel I'm missing out.

Can't wait for the odometer to add 5,000 miles. I sure do miss the days of 3,000 mile OCIs. Even if I was a millionaire I'd do my own oil changes. Lastly, I can't fathom why those who dread doing oil changes are on a lube board.

Whatever floats your boat. DIY, I know how and what's being done and with what products. If I have to stand over the guy doing the work, defeats the purpose IMO. Besides, many places don't allow you within a certain distance "for insurance puposes." Many, it's a short drain then refill.

Well, if you hate it, that about sums it up. As for the rest of the quote that would be projecting your opinion. Any job well done I find quite rewarding, no different for oil/filter change. And, clean/clear dipstick with a fresh filter and no leaks, fairly instant to me.

And your prices, are generally promotional and neglect the oft written fine print "plus shop fees". Can generally find promos using oil and filters I know and want for the same price or frequently less.

Since you aready said you "hate changing oil" doesn't sound like an issue to me.

Its not about whether you change the oil yourself, or have someone else do it. It's about the fact that you want to have a discusion about this topic...

I just had mine done @ my Lexus dealer in Doylestown. They did an excellent job.Used Synthetic Blend oil,(it was already their for some warranty work) Plus I now have a Toyota filter, and a new drain plug gasket.....

No shop fees in California.

There are certain auto repairs that I simply do not enjoy doing. I still enjoy doing other auto work-- I just did a complete front brake rebuild, serp belt, belt tensioner, water pump and motor mount(s) at my parent's house several weeks ago. But for some reason, oil changing just isn't of interest to me. I just wanted to see if there are others on this board who enjoy auto repair, but despise doing oil changes.

Critic,I dont think you really need to defend your decision to have it changed by some one other than yourself. As long as they do a good job. As I said,I just had a positive experience myself.
