Reciently there was a thread and the person that started the thread was considering a 4 cylinder Wrangler.

Yesterday I took my 02 Wrangler with it's 133k 4.0L and a 5 speed out to a stretch of empty street with nothing around. As you can see it's no Corvette but it has no problems when merging onto a hwy.

PS. I have no idea why it's sideways so just turn your head. And video recording is not my strong point.

I agree with you Chris.

Back when I owned my 1997 Wrangler 2.5L, 5spd, the only way I could pull my single jet-ski trailer out of the water, through the sand was in 4-low. She was so gutless, you'd have to slip the clutch too much trying to do it in 4-hi.

OTOH, prior to the Wranger, I had a 1994 2wd Cherokee with the 4.0L and 5spd. That sucker was a rocket! Very fun to drive.

They should have never made 4cy Jeeps. I have a CJ and miss my beloved Cherokee I sold a few years ago - 4.0L was a wonderful engine.

I have to LOL at this - the very first Jeeps were nothing BUT 4-cylinders! They were designed as a 4-cylinder vehicle!!!

I love how people think Jeeps started in 1970 when AMC bought them, and started sticking their 6-cylinders in them as a cost-saving measure!

Yeah, they were 'good' Jeeps, but were they REAL Jeeps???

:P

I drove a customers 40/50 something Jeep around the block once. Believe it or not the Go Devil with the 3 speed and 5.38 gears would have eaten my 89 with the 2.5, 5 speed and 4,10's for lunch!

Good point, I can accept that. I was referring to modern day Jeeps however....and just so you know I have owned all types of Jeeps from the old F-head 4's to the CJ's and everywhere in between...I know Jeeps.

I logged a LOT of hours behind the wheel of various M151 quarter ton "Jeeps"

I guess none of those were "real Jeeps" as they all had independent suspension and 4-cylinders.

I do know that the ones with the delivery date dash plaque with an AMC symbol were typically driveable at or above the 60mph indicated top speed on the speedometer but usually had sketchy transmissions. The Ford dash plaques had much easier to use transmissions but started to get squirrelly at or above 55 mph. Fortunately, 55 mph was all the Duece and a Halves were good for in a convoy so you didn't have to worry too much about it.
