Hey Pablo why did you move out of Seattle metro area in 1999?
I escaped rural western Washington in 2011. Now I have to put up with two traffic lights to get to my office. Very frustrating when I hit one of them when it turns red.
 
I am about to get out of the work place world at the right time... I am beyond thankful for the God given career I have had but after 40+ years the perfect time to go has all but arrived.

I had 36 years and called it a day end of July, now retirement is the best job I ever had!
 
Thank you OP for a timely reminder. In my late teens, growing up in a blue collar steel town, I committed to never joining the "rat race" and committed myself to "a road less traveled". Nearing age 69, I am grateful for that determination and decision.

On my days off during the week I have to plan my travels to avoid traffic and school zones.

Long time ago I worked in a hospital and my work day began at 5:30 AM and was at my computer logging on starting my day. I also left at 2:30 PM to beat traffic.

Showing up at 8 AM felt like half the day was wasted due to traffic, driving in parking garage looking for an empty spot for 20 minutes.

A bit south of there on 15 the whole freeway looks like that every evening. 4 lanes of stop and creep from hwy 76 all the way up to the 215 split. Throw in a wreck and a 40 mile commute can hit 6 or 7 hours. So glad we left. Traffic jam where we live now

People move to my area because housing is a little cheaper then they have to commute to work. It's common for them to spend 6+ hrs a day in traffic like this.

The freeway is still another mile or so over that Hill and the merge lane is only 1 lane so all those cars have to funnel down to 1 lane .

THIS is why a lot of the companies employees lobbied for a 3AM - 3PM shift change schedule. Getting to work at 3AM means you get up at or near 2AM. Thats just too early, It wrecks everything. They did it to avoid the worst of the Houston traffic. The problem was, about a third of us came from adjacent counties east of Houston. Traffic was not really any issue, but we had to go along with the 3AM - 3PM shift change.

Yeah, if I have to wait to turn onto the hwy at the end of my road for 3 cars, its rush hour! I do have a 35-40 minute drive to work but only go 2-3 days a week now, so its better than 5.
My side of the Toronto Area isn't getting wrecked as fast as the west and northwest. Lots of little towns there are now surrounded by 100's of acres of suburbia and big box stores.... And long commute times to get to a big city...
 
All this commentary -including inarguably stupid "Joe / Don" mentions- and public transportation doesn't come up?
And we're so smart.
Or car pooling, or getting a van service. My sister moved across the bay in S.F. and her company has a bus that picks up employees from over there so they don't have to fry their brains in traffic for an hour+. And maybe do some work.
When I was a kid my neighbor worked on a GM line in Oshawa and they had a 15 pass van that drove them in for the 1.5hr drive. I think the guy that drove it was a GM line worker too, so he made some decent money doing that, and the guys could have a drink or two after work on the way home. Gas money turned into beer money...
 
Yeah here in California they just passed an initiative to fund e-bike purchasers with up to $1700 of money based upon the cost of the e-bike.

This is our way of trying to fix the parking/ traffic problems here in Southern California.

Instead of us building a light rail system for short commute areas we build extra Lanes on the highway!

But back to the e-bike initiative funding of $10 million, you have to be 300% below the state's poverty level to qualify.! That is a very high percentage to only give this rebate to probably a very small amount of people and then the question arises how can you afford to even buy any bike if you are in that poverty level.?

Just my two cents.
