I was a vegetarian for 6 years. I gained weight, was dopey, mopey and squishy and my cholesterol would not go down. I went back to lean meat (mostly fish and beef,beefalo) and greens for the most part. Dropped weight and cholesterol, feel better.
There really is no benefit to a no meat diet other than some odd bragging right.

Yep, my experience too. While I have never been completely sans meat, when I was adding a lot of the conventional-wisdom "good foods" (beans, corn, chicken) my weight and cholesterol went up and up. Cutting all that, cutting cereal (totally useless carbs), adding salmon and the few greens that I can stand, brought it all way down.
