Wifey and I are on a short trip to Japan. I am learning a lot...
Lotta walking and bike riding. Rarely do I see a bike lock. I actually saw a little litter, cigarette butts.

Amazing place.

19-1/2 % of the population (of "15 years plus" age-I guess) smokes.

Japan smoking rate for 2022 was

  • Japan smoking rate for 2021 was 19.60%, a 0.6% decline from 2020.
  • Japan smoking rate for 2020 was 20.20%, a 0.3% decline from 2019.
  • Japan smoking rate for 2019 was 20.50%, a 0% increase from 2018.

While we've been busy, I was kinda wondering about the smoking in Japan. I saw almost no one smoking. I did smell cigaret smoke during walks; there are designated outside places in malls.
Of course, I only saw a little. Smoking is a bad one...

When we were on business in the beautiful North of Germany many years back, there was quite a bit of smoking. DeGaulle Airport in Paris, smoking was horrible.

Narita airport had one of the dirtiest Men's Rooms I have ever seen in my life. And many times, not one odd bad day. It ain't no Buc-ees. More like a Valero in a poor depressed area. I was shocked the first time there, maybe mid '80s.
Perhaps things have changed. Narita bathrooms are ultra modern and spotless. This whole airport is the nicest I have ever been in.

Nice trip, I love Kyoto.

They have bike lock as your photo has shown. Maybe you are just in a specific parking spot they have security camera on (it does say paid parking, so most likely there are some sort of recording system). They also have bike "licensed" so if you ever get caught riding a stolen bike you are going to be screwed (people know that you have a criminal record). Their second chance system is not as forgiving as the US.

And people do steal things in Japan, just not as bad as the US. #1 and #2 from what I heard are umbrellas and bikes.

I locked my bikes back in my college days and they do still get stolen. Liquid nitrogen works well against bike locks and they can always lift it to the back of a pick up truck and haul away.

We walked quite a bit and saw so many bikes. Locks were rare. I took that pick just because of the number of bikes. Regardless, I was quite surprised.

You and I both know you ain't gonna see that around here.
