'If' you wre going to change your diesel truck (Any mfg last 5 years) oil into one of the high mileage synthetics (Amsoil or Schaffers) and decided to run the vehicle using UOA until it was reccomended to change wouldn't your oil be so loaded with soot that it would be tar like??

Which option would give you the best result?
1. Amsoil - run their full flow filter and by pass setup
2. Schaffers - run Amsoil full flow filter and by pass setup.
3. Stock quality filter (WIX / M1 ) with Baldwin bypass.
4. running a quality filter with FS-2500 bypass.
5. running a quality full flow filter only.

Money is not the option, clean oil with maximum ROI..

The oil should never end up like tar. There is a point when the oil is completely saturated with soot. At this point the oil is still lubricating, but is unable to "clean" the soot from the engine.
A bypass filter should always be installed.

Hi,
Shup1 - IMO the following worked best for me over many years and millions of kms. Confirmed of course by many used oil analysis and engine teardown inspections

1 - Use Delvac 1 5w-40. This lubricant is probably the very best for managing soot at levels up to 4%!
2 - Use a centrifuge by-pass filter. These are excellent for removing soot from the lubricant and probably the best at this task
3 - Use Donaldson ELF filter(s) - or,
4 - Use a SS FF cleanable filter (only with 2) above)
5 - Use used oil analysis to establish a sensible OCI and of course to monitor the condition of the lubricant in the widest context

I know of no better lubricant than Delvac 1 5w-40 for handling soot!

Regards
Doug

Study up the diesel used oil anaylsis ,unless you live where it stays below freezing syn oil is a waste ,You probably will never drive it enough to justify a bypass setup ,is there any late model pickup with a soot problem? You could probably run 10,000 mile oil changes with any oil 'cept maybe in a 6.0 powerstroke but then Schaffers seems to hold up very very good. .... not talking about a semi are you ? if so Dougs word is gospel.

I guess I am just running the numbers...

The long and short is that the cpm is low on any variable, but lowest on Dino / Baldwin setup. I figured on just a straight cash out lay on the filter setup since I am not determining the length of service on this vehicle and I could take it with me so it is really infinate.
In the synthetic line it looks like the Amsoil/Amsoil is the winner by .002, but I would be the winner by only changing oil once with Amsoil / FS 2500 (2 bypass filter changes)& Amsoil / Amsoil (withonly one change overall)

NOW THE REAL QUESTION:

Since you can throw a blanket over the cpm and the bypass cost is infinate WHICH OIL IS THE CLEANEST AND MORE LIKELY TO CONTINUE SERVICE WITH UOA????

To do it proper you forgot to add in a used oil analysis at the manufactures recommended oil change interval to the calcs. Depends on the motor and operation how the oil holds up . I find simplicity the best, Delo 400 ,any filter recommended by the mfg at recommended oil change intervals. Amsoil full flow filters and Amsoil single bypass setup with Diesel marine oil would be the way to go, easy ,good quality, low price .Schaffers 9,000 oil or Mobil's Delvac 1 if syn and bypass filters are desired. All can be purchased from site sponsers which will give you good advice and service.Look them up.

Almost any late model diesel pickup is going to cause soot loading because of EGR and other emissions related equipment in the newer trucks. The 6.7L Cummins is probably one of the worst ones currently...

IMO, if I were to run infinite OCIs, I'd run the largest bypass I could within reason (extended FCIs, increased "sump" capacity) and a high-grade conventional oil (unless we are talking cold temps as previously noted).

I run a Gulf Coast 0-1, with Rotella 15w40 CJ-4...it seems to work...although you change 1.5 gallons of oil every 10k miles (with the FCI).

Steve...I actually realized that after I did the note and ran out of edit time, I also did not include replacing oil during bypass filter change ( I figured we could recycle 90% back into system)....Figured someone would catch it :)

Cost per mile: $0.0075 $0.0068 $0.0071 $0.0057 $0.0051 $0.0042

So I still fugure on one UOA even on Dino setup, it is almost twice the cost per mile but still very low in the scheme of overall cost.
