I have a 2018 F-150 (5.0L), and found oil on Amazon ($20 / for a 5 quart bottle). But I'm wondering if it's the right stuff.

It shows that it meets WSS-M2C960-A1. This was not disclosed on the amazon page, and my manual says I should use WSS-M2C945-B1.

My question is: Is this differnt specification ok? I can't find much about WSS-M2C960-A1 online.

What spec does the owners manual recommend? Reread the section of the manual completely

That's the newest Ford Spec for 5W-20 for the new SP / GF-6A Oils that came out May 1, 2020. It supercedes the previous spec. The Motorcraft 5w30 that came out of the bulk tank at the Ford Quick Lane for my free oil change on June 03, 2020 was WSS-M2C961-A1 and is what Ford is putting in the 3.5EB now. The new Owner's Manuals will show the new spec in a year or two.

Use that oil in your Coyote with confidence. It may show API SN+ or SP and GF-5 or GF6(A) on the bottle given the prohibition on displaying before a certain date but it means you got upgraded to the new tougher standards.

This is correct in my opinion ^^^^↑^^^^^^^

You got a upgraded oil that is SP rated. It's a good day man. No worries.

I don't see anywhere where WSS-M2C960-A1 is listed in the manual. This is what it shows:

Name Specification
Recommended motor oil (U.S.): Motorcraft® SAE 5W-20 Synthetic Blend Motor Oil XO-5W20-QSP WSS-M2C945-B1

The link you gave doesn't mention WSS-M2C960-A1.

The full document. Knock yourself out. I'm not paying for it.

Here is the cliff notes:
OIL, ENGINE, GASOLINE, ILSAC GF-6, SAE 5W-20 ***TO BE USED WITH FORD WSS-M99P1111-A***

It was approved in December and went in effect in May. Ford doesn't even have their data sheet on the Motorcraft up yet due to Covid-19 delays. It's not going to be in the Owner's Manual even the online version yet.

Among other things it adds tests for LSPI (Low Speed Pre-ignition) which is an issue with GDI engines like yours and Timing Chain Wear. Ford is supplying one of the test engines used for some of the certification. A 2.0L Ecoboost. The Ford Spec itself may have one or two tighter requirements but the new spec always supercedes the old. Motorcraft isn't going to keep four 5W-20 Blends in production.

What oil did you buy? If you look up the datasheet it may still have the superceded certs up.

I know standard Mobil 1 5W-20 list the new 960 "meets requirements" and list the old 945 for "recommended for" on their datasheet.

Thanks everyone. I was worried that i found some shady seller on Amazon that was selling me some old spec'd oil that I didn't want to use. Especially since it was about $10 cheaper per jug than normal.

More confirmation from wemay...

The newest Motorcraft in 5w30 (961 instead of 960).
