Hello everyone, I just wanted to post that after almost 5 yrs of ownership I have sold my 2006 Evo, and just wanted to Thank Everyone with all the help on oil related issues that I had on that vehicle. Many folks have asked why I sold it, but I had an opportunity and I took it. Thats all I can say.

I guess I will never know how good the RL will ever be in that EVO haha.

I now own a 2011 Hyundai Sonata SE (non-turbo) and it calls for a 5/20 oil. This 5/20 stuff is all new to me. I have no experience with this weight of oil. The manual states 7500 mile OCI's. I was going to go about 1000-1500 miles on the OEM fill before dumping it out. The manual also states "Quaker State Oil Preferred" I am not sure why? My Evo said a similar thing but with M1. So maybe the cars were tested with that oil in?

Just was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction for a good synthetic oil to use in this car. Is Quaker State Synthetic pretty decent? I believe that Penzoil owns them? But the formulas are totally different.

So please some advice and opinon on what to use. I just want to stick with one. Don't want to change up like I used to in my Evo. Im looking for something I can buy anywhere, no special order stuff. Im done with that too. Most over the counter stuff these days should suffice this cars needs.

Again, Thank You, The Evo will be Missed, but Its time to move on.

Sounds good to me, I have been contiplating 3 oils. M1 5/20, Penzoil Ultra or PP, or the QS Synthetic. Any plus or minus to either choice here?

Yep, although there's no need to stick with Quaker State - that's just advertising. Though there's nothing wrong with QS, and their "Ultimate Durability" is a very good bang for the buck.

Congrats on the new car!

This is not a direct knock but an in general statement,,, so many people want the best oil no matter what the cost and spend $$$$ on uoas stress and worry spend top dollar on fancy filters and sell off their vehicle before it is even close to be worn out. Why all the worry ? There was a website that posted Ford Powerstroke UOAs " a really well done site" . These guys ran syn oils and bypass filters did UOAs like clockwork and then traded in the trucks at 100,000 miles. These engines go 300,000 miles + with the cheapest dino HDEO and Motorcraft filters. I don't understand it.

I think I read (this was maybe 2 yr ago) that Hyundai's factory fill was QS, or something like that.

I'd say there is nothing wrong with any one of your choices and all of them would serve you well.
I prefer Pennzoil myself but it were me and the manufacturer recommended QS, then I go with that until the warranty is up.

Since they use QS and you can get it in 5qt bottles at WM (the only thing I buy at that store), I'd use QS syn.

We own our 3rd and 4th Hyundai vehicle. No problems. I recommend that you use OEM filters along with your synthetic 5W20 oil.

We are using QS Synthetic 5W20 in ours.

Hope you like the Sonata Jeff. My GF is on her second one. Her 2000 has 120k miles and still going strong. She Gave it to her daughter. She has an 09 now. She uses 5-20 Valvoline conventional in both and is stuck on the 3k mile oil changes though. I like PP, PU, M1, Syntec plus Motorcraft blend is good if you go with a blend. All have nice add packs

The newest Sonata uses a DI engine, which are harder on oil due to fuel dilution. Hyundai calls for 3750-mile OCI's in severe service, and no matter how you drive, that's what I'd follow.

As far as viscosity, Hyundai 'allows' different viscosities, depending on conditions and use. If they allow for a 5w30 or even 10w30 to be used, I'd use it. You don't need the cold-spec ability in Ca, and a slightly thicker oil will reduce wear caused by fuel dilution.

I have used 5w20, 0w30, & 10w30 in my little Hyundai.
The 30wt oils are more quiet & smooth, and there is
no real-life mpg difference between all of them.
The oil search continues for you, my friend

I would argue that the DI engine would produce LESS Fuel Dilution not more? Im confused by this. I am new to DI engines, but to me when an ECU can spray such a fine mist of fuel at such a high PSI it would mean a very clean burn IMO.

anyone else agree with me on this? or am I WAY off on this concept of DI?

I would like to stick with a 5/20 even here in CA mainly for the MPG's. If I use a full synthetic I am sure I will be fine, even in the 120F heat where I live. Aslo, Hyundai under "normal" driving says 7500 miles on OCI's. Severe is 3750, so I will go 5000 on the OCI's once she's broke in. I plan on changing the oil at 1000-1500 miles.

I Must admit this new Sonata is very nice. People always ask how I could afford a Lexus, haha. When I tell them its a Hyundai, I watch as their mouths drop. Mastercard momment. How they say? "Priceless" haha.

Jeff

most DI engines have fuel dilution issues as well as intake valve deposits, as the intake valve is no longed washed by gas or fuel injector cleaner
My vote is QSUD and Hyundai OEM filters at 5K

Best mpg I ever got was with 0w-30. My mustang has that same retarded 5w-20 spec and its a joke.

You don't need syn oil in the engine and the track record with DI makes me want to wait for others to trouble themselves with the development issues.
