Testing Idea Regarding Ecore Ribcage

The AcDelco thread posted got me thinking: I have noticed on the Champion Ecore filters that the ribcage blocks substationally less of the filtration media. Also it is far stronger than many of the metal ones I have pulled off of other filters including old champ designs. Many here complain of the material the plastic is made of becoming brittle. I am not sure what material these rib-cages are made off but I can tell you they are not brittle nor weak.

Would the rib-cage really be a variable in how well the the oil flows through the filter or would it be the same. I am not a filter specialist I do not know these things. Would there be a viable way to test such a thing? I am very curious of this and would like the "pro" filter people to chime in and see if the ribcage is a big player in how well a filter can provide a good consistant flow to your engine; On start up and during use.

Let me know any ideas or thoughts.
 
Holes are realatively cheap. I can't believe an engineer would compromise the flow of a filter by failing to put enough holes in the center tube. The larger open space in the Ecore most likely has to do with how little support the media needs. The steel tube has excess support and enough flow. The plastic one has enough support and excess flow.

I'm getting a little tired of the Ecore paranoia myself.

I doubt that. The media is always going to be the biggest flow reducer factor in an oil filter ... whether the oil is hot or cold. The holes in the base plate and center core contribute very little resistance to the oil flow ... maybe 10~15% of the total PSID I’d estimate.
 
Thanks superbusa I am still learning the filter flow and PSID stuff. The links are appreciated. I will get back and post my thoughts after I read those links and do some reasearch when I get home from work.

Also if anyone has any ideas on how to test this. If it is not to expensive I would be willing to throw something together.
 
Took me a few minutes to run a test. Out in my garage, I had a pan of cold, used oil, and probably what was left of a Microguard 10193. I had already removed the filter media to measure it leaving only the end caps and center tube. I covered the bypass with duct tape. I then poured oil into the center tube and it ran out almost as fast as I poured it in, maybe a second or 2 before it was all gone. Much faster than if you prefill a filter. You can fill the center tube of a filter, but let it set a while and the oil level drops as it runs through the filter media to the outside of the media. It takes several additions of oil before you get the volume outside the media filled.



So buy whatever cheap filter you can and an Ecore equivalent. Cut them open. Start with a measured amount of oil, maybe a cup full. Pour it in the center tube and time how long it takes for it to all run out. Then remove the media and time it again.

My guess is that Superbusa's 10-15% guess is high. I doubt you will be able to measure the difference between the center tubes.

Note, I have decided prefilling a filter is anal and could do more harm than good.

What I was saying above is that of the total PSID from the oil filter, I'd estimate that the combined pressure drop due to the holes in the base, plus the holes in the center core (and also some from the ADBV) is probably only 10 ~ 15% of the total PSID.

Example - if the total PSID of a filter is 5 PSI, then the base holes, center core holes and ADBV combined would only contribute maybe 0.5 ~ 0.75 PSI, and the media would provide the rest (4.25 ~ 4.5 PSI).

The difference between an ecore and a standard metal core with many holes might be in the realm of a few tenths of a PSI.
 
After reading up I am going to have to agree that any differences will be neglegible.

However, I will pick up a Supertech ST3950 (AcPf52) and I will compare it to the regular Purolator white can that I can get from pepboys. This will have to wait though till I get paid.
 
The ST 3950 was a much bigger filter than the PF52 and had a bypass. Haven't seen one in years here, but do see some reports of them on BITOG.

Any owners of a polymer framed pistol knows how strong polymer can be. Most often it is stronger than steel. Nothing wrong with a good polymer (or plastic) as long as its a good formulation.

My fried is a LEO in Richmond, CA and he has 300,000 rounds through is first gen Glock.

Instinct is to not trust plastic since we all remember seeing cheap and brittle bakelite type plastics. However, not all plastics are weak.

I have no issue with an E Core after shooting my poly framed handguns.
 
The nylon center cage in the Ecore filter seems to be a decent design ... too bad they didn't use nylon end caps of some kind too.

Do you expose your polymer frame pistol to 220 degrees? I think that's what people are concerned with.

They should use 1 filter and disect it to see how tough it actually is.

Anywho, Labman I meant a ST3980 my apologies. I will get paid next friday and will pick up some supplies to do this test.
