Champ filters

One of my vendors brought by the new catalogs last week and they now carry champ filters. I usually purchase for the next six months at a time for my fleet and last time we went with Baldwin. No problems at all with Baldwin and many were cut open and found in perfect condition. These champ filters are made in the US by Champion labs and look to be ecore filters with white paint. And did I mention they are cheap. I told them to give me a case of ph820 and ph500 as those are the most used 2 filters in my fleet. If they work out I would consider using them across the board but I like to cut open and see if they are lasting and run some oil analysis to be sure. Anyone have experience with these filters? They work out to $2.00 a piece.

My experiences with Champ PH820 were good. I bought a case of close outs from Rock Auto and used up most on 3000 mile oil changes. I never had an issue with one. I’ve used them up to 6000 miles over the summer months and the ADBV still held oil. Each one was cut open for inspection. No troubles found. This was on a 2004 Ford Ranger 4.0L V6.

I used to buy them at the local mom and pop auto parts store...they went out of business and the chain parts stores don't have them...never had a problem with those filters

Perhaps someone else can comment on the validity of my assessment, it appears to me that many newer Champ made filters are using a METAL E-Core design for their center tube. I was at the Great Walmart of China yesterday and looked at some newer design AC Delco oil filters and they are utilizing this as well as Royal Purple, Mobil 1, and a few other Champ affiliated oil filter brands I have seen.

Personally I like this center tube design more than any other I have see. I may reach out to Champ to see what application they are using this on and consider purchasing accordingly.

Champ filters are listed as economy filters at Rock Auto. You can buy PH48 Champs for $1.37 each plus shipping.

Thanks but shipping kills the comparison. After shipping the filter would cost $8.56 and put it in a price league well above Champ and Baldwin.

Haven't heard of or seen a metal eCore center tube. Maybe someone can find some of these and take a few photos and post them.

I shared this video in another thread and if you look down the center tube of the newer Royal Purple filter you will see slat like openings instead of round holes. I cannot speak to whether or not that specific filter uses a metal center tube but the AC Delco filter I saw at Walmart recently had the same slat design using a metal center tube.

The first filter has a metal center tube with louvers instead of holes ... pretty standard these days on most filters.

The second filter in the video is an eCore center tube made of a hard black nylon material, not black metal. That's the standard for about any eCore oil filter.

The filters were delivered today. Cost works out to $1.44 each for the PH820 and $1.66 each for the PH500. I'll cut one of each open and post as soon as I get a chance.

Champ filters are fine filters and I doubt you will ever have a single problem, but Baldwin is a proven fleet filter company. There micron rating is not going to be as fine as a Fram Ultra or Wix filter, but they are built strong and will handle fleet abuse.

Both Champs' look to be of stellar make . Wonder how their oil filter for the G.D.I. (1.6 ltr. ) would hold up to 5 > 6 mile o.c.i. with gas laden oil . Be interesting to see a used CHAMP oil filter . Thanks for those .

I put one on a police car today. We will see what a used one looks like in a few months.

Didn’t know they now use metal core. Wa plastic core for whole 16 years I used them at our fleet. No issues ever with Champ Labs filters either as we use them for 4,5 and 7,500 OCI

Just my 2cents on what a technician at a fleet observes 🤗
