Tesla Christmas Road Trip - Battery needed frequent re-charging - Range Estimates were 50% to 69% off

The fact he didn’t plug in overnight shows this a show piece.
The fact is you do not know if there was a plug in, maybe you can check with the hotel. Also let's not forget this was a comparison to an ICE vehicle. Does an ICE vehicle required a gas hose to recharge over night? What is there was no room at the only Inn?

Even if so tell me how that changes the facts on driving range. Please explain, gosh, how the human mind can deny facts.
The agenda is from those who chose to ignore facts and make up reasons to ignore them. The fact remains, Tesla reported driving range that did not come close to reality. That is fact. It was a miserable EV experience for this trip.

It isn't cold weather per se that effects range its a cold battery.
Like what happens in when you leave it unplugged outside overnight.
You are then forced to use energy to warm the battery & the cabin vs just the cabin reducing range.

Engineering explained goes over all of this.

It's a fact that guy took X amount of time to make that trip.

It's not a fact that was the fastest way to do it, or that this was even well planned according to the guy himself.

I dont think anyone is saying an EV will beat and ICE car, but presenting this one trip by one guy as an end all for every trip doesnt hold any weight to me.

This piece does prove a guy with zero EV experience or planning can easily make a winter trip from Chicago to NY for a 3.5 hour penalty.

The bar has been moved DRAMTICALLY in the last 10 years from "Its not possible" to "anyone can do it" (even someone with an anti EV agenda).

This guy was simply not serious about trying to get a good transit time on this trip.

6 stops turned into 8 when it could have been done in 4.

That article pretty much sums it up....

Interesting comment:

So let’s get this straight. They…

Rented a vehicle with an empty battery.Ignored the car’s navigation because it was too “circuitous.”Added detours without adjusting navigation and complained when this added time.Noted that the navigation placed stops at less than the full range of the battery, as if this was a failure.Stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott where they coulsn’t recharge, when the Hampton Inn 500 feet away has multiple outdoor plugs for customers.Apparently added 2 charging stops in post to make it look worse.Joked that Biden was going to give EVs to migrant caravans.
Watching Fox deliberately do everything wrong made me feel like I was watching the black-and-white portion of an infomercial.

Interesting comment:
Just goes to show, it takes thought and effort with an EV including where to stay and the cost of that stay, heck, now the vehicle has to determine where you stay and even then you assume there is a charger available? *LOL* Good lord are we going backwards in time using new technology?
Even then again Tesla underestimates driving range by a gross amount in cold weather which we seem to be leaving out of these comments over and over, why? deflection of the fact?
Call me crazy, but the ICE takes none of this hassle. Which the video is about, a "comparison" so who won? Hands down, ICE of course. You can actually enjoy your trip, stay where you want and arrive hours ahead of time.

Sounds like a reason to take the motorcycle.

The fact is they were being stupid for the sake of a puff piece to put EV's down. They had an agenda. They could have easily plugged it in overnight and set the "Charge by time" on the Tesla to precondition not only the battery but the rest of the car for the morning trip. They chose to be purposely obtuse for the "viewers" I bet.

No more common sense that driving anything else. How many people push the range on a normal car on a daily basis and get surprised when it runs out of fuel? A hotel is a hotel, they are all 1 night stays, a bed/bath and that's it. We are not talking about denying you a well-furnished B&B here.

It wasn't a contest but ok.

Yeah it takes about 1-2 min to get a plan from ABRP.
Most guys cant spare that on a 13 hour trip the night before, given how much trouble he had with the car maybe he isnt internet savvy?

Did anyone say that an EV would be faster than ICE on this trip?

So, if I understood this:
1. They tested vehicles made for the Bay area, where you can park them outside so neighbors can see them, in Ohio, Indiana, PA, etc. Okay.
2. Tesla said that if it is cold, it will be shorter. If it is hot, it will be shorter range. If the Moon is full, it will be a shorter range. If the sun is going through its minimum, it will be in a shorter range. I don't see why they complain.

Glad you agree, when you have an EV it determines where you stay not where you want to stay if you want to charge overnight , assuming when you do arrive at a specific place that the car will make you stay there is open chargers available.

Which in this case would have helped save 20 minutes? Still wouldnt make up for the gross miscalculation by the Tesla driving distance. Which Tesla admits will be wrong in very cold and very hot weather.

Some might disagree it wasnt a contest, see clip from video. But even if it wasnt, the facts cant be denied. (simple stuff)

Yup. That route's well known and traveled so not trying to put the EVs best foot forward is transparent instantly.

Everyone knows there will be differences, the question is what are they when you actually try ?

Which is a great factual help to those driving in those types of conditions before spending money for a vehicle they are miserable with.
Wouldnt you agree? I mean if the ICE is an all purpose motor, it might make sense to know the limitations of its competition.

As an owner, I can tell you those numbers don't make sense. The guy does not even know how to use the car, as shown by the key card fiasco. He seems to be charging when the battery is pretty full, which is slow. The time to charge is when the battery is low coupled with a bio break, food, etc. The only reason to charge after 50 some miles is if there was not a charger withing 200 miles or whatever, and Tesla would avoid routing you that way.

Puff piece at best.

Consider the source...love watching Musk coddle this crowd...some genius.

Of course comparing an EV to and ICE vehicle like this gives a big advantage to the gas powered vehicle. There are gas stations everywhere while charging stations are yet to be fully integrated into society as normal.

Engineering explained goes over all of this.

Electric motors and electronics do quite well in cold temperatures. But as you note the battery is the weak point.

And with ICE vehicles, fuel economy tends to go down with temperatures too. Throw in that most drivers are going to wait for the vehicle to heat up and defrost with the engine running to provide heat and power. That's done with most EVs in cold weather, but obviously the traction motors don't need to operate at the same time like an engine needs to run in an ICE.

It's always good to know the facts and what the limitations REALLY are because there are limitations, but what are they?

It's not helpful when the limitations arent accurately represented.

You and I can take the same trip in an ICE car and achieve vastly different miles per gallon if we wish to prove a point - both can claim at the end of the trip it's a fact this car got "x" - but that isnt the whole truth is it?
