'tec' engines indicate reliability?

My 2.3 in a '11 ranger blew up in a few days. Ford Mazda made-in-Spain YecchTec. Garbage.

Tons of 20-30 y.o. Olds and Pontiacs compact and midsizers still running fine around these parts. Back before GM went into the toilet along with ford.

WE used to have a Duratec Ranger at work that went over 260k with no problems at all. Just because you have the uncanny ability to make good reliable engines blow up in 5 minutes doesn't mean they're garbage. I bet you could make a Sherman tank blow up in a million pieces using nothing but a paper clip and a screwdriver.

FORDS are indefensible. Funny My YUGO ran strong and hard and near forever until my GF made me sell it because it was "embarrassing" for here to be seen in it.
Most all fords ive owned have been fall-apart garbage. An that includes my '69 428 Super Cobra Jet Fairlane. OUR 62 galaxie 500 was sweet as was our '73 460 lincoln Towne Coupe - SO FORD MADE AT LEAST 2 GOOD CARS ....

Not all of anything are good.

This is an important point. One failure does not indict an entire brand.

ALL mfgrs make a lemon or two, every single one. Now how they handle them is another thread...

VTEC incredible reliability for me in Civic. My friends NSX astounding reliability for a then 1991ish super car.

"Tec" on the back of an engine name indicates what the maker is branding the engine as.

The 1.4T Ecotec in my Cruze is a gem of an engine, though. It's not that powerful, but has a thick powerband right where I use the engine in daily driving. It also gets great fuel economy. Overall weaknesses have shown to be stuck-open thermostats and leaky waterpumps, both affecting a small percentage of cars. Overall, couldn't ask for a better engine.

The 1.5l i-VTEC mill in the Fit is another decent daily driver engine. It moves that car well for being 117 hp. Even in city traffic, it still gets about 28-30 mpg. It does have its Honda-ism's, such as needing valve adjustments and needing to be caned to make any real power.

I'd take both "Tec" engines all day every day.

Meh the tec thing is a marketing term.

Like "I" being stuck everywhere.

Let me add some porn to make this engine thread better.

They did not handle it well at all. With Modern manufacturing practices NO engine should leave the factory with a major problem. If it does something in the design or manufacturing process is flawed.

^^^Actually that is simply a failure to manage your expectations.

Perfection is not available at any price in the world of mass production. There will ALWAYS be a few lemons no matter the process.

It was a failure on many levels. Manufacturing process, cheap parts. Lack of tech knowledge at dealership. Lack of concern by GM and dealership.. ETC..

Its a systemic failure and unacceptable..

Yeah, I blew a headgasket on a new engine due to ... uhhhh, uhhh, uhhh?. Ive owned over 70 cars so I have a much larger sample size than anyone here, I would guess. Actually thinking back, I had a minor problem with the FORD Webber/CARTER 2bbl carb on the Yugo, and the FORD sourced heater vacuum coolant valve puked.
