'tec' engines indicate reliability?

'Intec' - Name for Ford 4.6L SOHC V-8, one of the most reliable engines Ford has made.

'Duratec' - Name for Ford DOHC I-4's and V-6's, very, very reliable engines that have very few issues.

'Ecotec' - Name for GM DOHC I-4 2.2L and 2.4L engines, again, very reliable engines known to last a long time.

Only ones I can think of - know any others?

Also, does 'tec' indicate an engine design that is likely to be more reliable?

Not sure what you mean by "better"

The dual-VANOS engines make more power, just like the VTEC engines make more power. Yes, there is a bit more to go wrong, but they are generally reliable.

- Didn't Chrysler also have an Ecotec?

I prefer Vulcan to Duratec, but, yeah. The other one was the H.O. 3.0. *there were two; LS were Duratec, GS were Vulcan.) You can tell by dual exhaust, or not. Both were supposed to be trouble-free.

VORTEC = Chevrolet

That's what I was meaning, issues with the VANOS/D-VANOS itself.

Mine had just a really big "oversquare" block with 4800RPM redline on a gasoline engine, and monster torque.. no VANOS, nor Super ETA head.

The InTech (32V) wasn't fitted to any of the above vehicles except the Mark VIII. The other Lincoln products that carried it were the Continental and Aviator.

Other cars that saw use of the 32V 4.6L were the Mustang Cobra, Mach 1 and Mercury Marauder.

Indeed. I had one in a Fiero with minor mods that made 200 hp at the wheels and ran trouble free for years. Just recently resold by my buyer after a decade and still running great!

I have heard of these with a turbo making 300hp reliably. Super strong mid range torque in my N/A setup.

Actually Ford's Duratech I4's are basically Mazdatech so I'd thank Mazda for the reliability not Ford.

I out-accelerated a 1994-1997 Honda Accord in mine. Pull to triple-digit speeds. I won.
