It's time to change my ATF again. I used AMSOIL in the past because they state their ATF lasts 50 (severe) -100 (normal)thousand miles.

I can get Royal Purple from Amazon but they don't seem to make any extended drain claims. Is that something unique to Amsoil, or do they all have a similiar longevity?

are you running a tow truck or towing something w/o a tow package?

If this is so, then syn *may* provide some form of added longevity due to higher resistance to oxidation due to high heat.

If you are not towing/hauling, then I don't see that being beneficial.

Again, my 2c's worth. been dealing with cars for so many years...

Q.

I have used Amsoil for 15 years and have changed it at intervals of about 50K to 85K. I put a rebuilt trans in my Dad's Caravan, threw Amsoil trans fluid and a magnifine filter. I had him run that sucker to 85K and when I changed the fluid it was still pretty bright red with no debris in the pan and nothing I could see inside the magnifine filter when I tore it open.

I was pretty impressed. I won't be using anything else anytime soon.

I have one volvo 89 volvo 740 that has about 50k on the Amsoil ATF. At the time I put it in, Amsoil recommended 3X the manufacturers recommedation which was 20K from volvo. 20K seemed pretty short to start with especially since the turbos came with an extra ATF cooler.

Since I see they now go recommend 50-100K I think I'll go a lot longer. I tow nothing so I'm certainly not at the extreme end.

I still have another vehcile that I am planning on switching over soon, though. I't a 90 volvo 740 which has the same transmission that the PO had rebuilt. Maybe they should have changed it to Amsoil...

If you are having heart murmers at 50,000, pull an oil sample and find out if the fluid is still good.

Years ago, I had a Dodge Maxivan mini-motorhome. Put the AMSOIL ATF in at about 60,000 miles. Used it fairly heavily, hauled a lot of oil. At 200,000 miles, the body was shot and not worth fixing. Pulled an ATF sample before it went off, and fluid was still suitable for continued use.

Alternative--change what fluid comes out of the pan, and keep going.

I went 60K on my first fill of Mobil 1 ATF in my Buicks 4T65E. It was actually only a partial fill because I didn't have enough Mobil 1 on hand so I topped up with 2+ qts. of ST dino ATF. The fluid still looked good after 60K. I totally believe in SYNTHETIC ATF due to its ability to take heat better than dino fluid. Heat is an A/T's worst enemy.

You don't state what type of vehicle/tranny. GM 4l60E trannies can go 100,000 miles with normal service on regular Dex-3 (but I wouldn't do it), so 100,000 on royal purple shouldn't be hard to do.

I agree that the synthetic is the way to go on a trans. Don't know anything abut Royal purple, but Amsoil has done well by me.

Some guys like to just run dino trans fluid, but I want to climb under the car as little as possible.

The most important question that needs to be asked is how you change it. If you wait until 80K or 100K to simply do a drain/refill (leaving 60% or more of old fluid in transmission) than that's much too long of an interval. If your doing a complete transmission flush, where you are assured ALL the fluid is 100% new, you could probably run to 80K or 100K safely.

Personally I do drain/refills every 25K miles knowing I'm always keeping the transmission fluid in a near-new condition. If you wait until 100K and do a drain/refill, your always behind the eight ball, so to speak.

That is relative. I feel like changing it every 25K is getting behind the eight ball. It's also a drag, I could do other things that I want to do with the time I save. Like posting more drivel on BTOG....

My Dad's van had 85,000 miles and it still looked bright red. Maybe not quite as bright as brand new but still pretty bright.
