I am switching to my old dino standby, Mobil Super 5000, non HM or synthetic. Because it is easier to get sales on at all the auto parts stores, and i am probably only going to go 5k between changes anyway.

Does anyone else have oil reccomendations, for commonly on sale oil that is as good, or better than mobil super 5000 in dino? It will also be 5W20 instead of 5W30 next change.

2003 Sable GS with the vulcan V6.

Quaker state ultimate is a good oil, but...after having it in there i think it is a bit of overkill for the car. i kind of bought it as an impulse choice, since i saw the bulk dino turn bad quickly.

I recently switched from QSUD in my Azera and Elantra, and Pennzoil Ultra in my FX4 to Mobil Super 5000. I will have a UOA in the FX4 soon, but it looks very promising. Since you are only going 5000 on an OCI, I would say use the Mobil; especially if the price point is good on it.

Smart Man....

Get Peak conventional and run it for 5K miles. Just look at the PQIA site and you'll see that it is some very good oil.

IMO.....Peak conventional, QSAD and WM SuperTech are all one and the same as far as quality oil with a very good add pack.

If you can still find some Peak Full Synthetic 5w-20 at AAP on clearance for $1.95 a quart....go with that...IMO the same as QSUD and WM SuperTech Full Synthetic.

I'm currently switching between MC semi-syn 5W20 and PYB or Qstate Green 5W20 on my fit. They all seem to go along with my fit's OLM and I'm very satisfied with them so far.

PYB seems to be a tad "thicker" than that of my MC 5W20 so it sounds better in my engine (perceivable sound-wise, while all others being pretty much the same).

Q.

My preference would be to use a good synthetic blend motor oil such as Durablend, Maxlife, or Motorcraft, but not extend the range much higher than that of a typical conventional (e.g. 5,000-7,000 miles depending how you drive).

Here is a fine looking Maxlife UOA for Sable that went 8000 miles on the oil:

Should be supersafe for 5,000-6,000 mile OCI. Both Maxlife and Motorcraft are sold at every day low price of about $18-19 in our local walmart, and the Motorcraft oil filters cost about $4.

A lot of Auto Parts stores are running the $20 mail-in rebate promotion on NextGen version of Maxlife (AutoZone, 2 per household; AAP, 1 per household). I'd personally stock up on 5W30 now, and use the stash for one, two years before worrying about buying oil again.

If i can get PYB for about 3.30 a quart at sears, would you consider that a decent deal?

It is on sale right now at the local sears.

Filters are overpriced but that oil seems right priced.

That's about what you would be able to buy from Walmart for, so yes that is a decent price. PYB is an excellent oil also.

If you are lookin for a good deal on some Dino, Fred's has Formula Shell for $2.50 a quart, if you have one in your area. Don't know if this is just a local sale or national sale. I noticed it was sn & sm versions all mixed up though. Had 10w30, 5w30, and 5w-20 on the end cap, and a bunch in the back. I got a buggy full myself. They had a bunch of havoline filters too. Don't remember the price on those but they looked good, resembled a Bosch.

None near me, just like O'Reileys.

I am probably going to go back to my old standby, Mobil super 5000, probably the HM version, since i got a slight valve cover leak that is NOT worth the hassle to fix.

Whats the general consensus on PYB vs Mobil Super 5000? What one is better or are they pretty equal and just go with whatever one is on sale that day?

I'm sure some prefer one over the other, but your idea to go with whatever is on sale that day is on the money, if you ask me. I like PYB and Mobil conventional. I got a bunch of PYB on sale, so that's what I'm using.

I perfer going with a non store brand, i know it sounds weird but...i feel more comfortable with a name brand product when it comes to motor oil...it is probably due to the generic oil product not being the same from purchase to purcahse.

For example what if the wal-mart near me switches from getting Supertech from WPP to Shell, or some other company.

I know this is going to sound weird....

But in my newer cars, I'll run one OCI of QSUD or G-Oil, with the next one being Valvoline NG.

I just have that feeling that if any varnish even thinks about developing, the next OCI of syn will clean it out.

Although I can tell no diff in the oils at the end of an OCI when they drain.

I still can't make myself go full dino though. Even though my Honda's would do just fine on it.

At my local O'Reilly there are many quarts on sale for $3.75. The Castrol section is wiped out clean, a few WB Valvolines, but the NextGen section is "dusty" from no one purchasing it other than me. I usually buy my NextGen from Advance though due to the rebates offered.

Anyways, I went way off track, but you may consider something similar.

Speaking of which.. if you want to get deals, why stick with just one brand name? IMHO all brand name conventional oils are good enough for a 5,000 mile OCI. Mobil 5000, Castrol GTX, Valvoline Conventional and Maxlife, PYB, Motorcraft, Peak conventional, Quaker State, etc. Even store brand conventional oils are probably just as good. They're made and or formulated by the same companies as the brand names. Simply buy what's on sale..

Its more or less my "Default" oil...if i find a name brand for less i will get it, or peak if i can get a filter+Oil deal.

If you want to stock up, consider the Valvoline NextGen deal at AutoZone. $23 for jug with a Fram TG filter, and they will send you a $20 AZ gift card. Get the card and use it to apply for the same kind of deal again (the limit is 2 rebate cards per address/household, the NextGen promotion will last through September). Advance Auto also has a FAR offer for Valvoline NextGen, but I couldn't find a 5W20 in their stores.
