Quaker State Ultimate Protection is GTL Based! (or might not be; read full thread)

Same with the 2 dozen EHC buyers - why can’t they slip a small percentage in across thousands of gallons and still call it a synthetic … pretty loose standards for “synthetic” …
But then again base oil and particularly exchange is based on material properties (VI, saturates, sulfur, etc.) which is used to achieve a performance level in the finished product. Interchange specifically excludes method of production.

I get that - EHC is still cracked - my point is that EHC is cheaper than Grp3 which tends to be what we consider entry level synthetic …
P66 Grp3 is not cracked (method) …

You mean S-Oil?

P66 makes Grp IIs under pure performance. They had the contract with S-Oil for IIIs. That went to Motiva in 2021~ish.

Been a fair amount of discussion over Quaker States Ultimate Protection here. One of the points of discussion has been whether or not it was really any different from the full synthetic. From reviewing the PDS sheets and VOA's they look very similar, except the Ultimate had an MRV of about half of that of the full synthetic. That made me suspicious it might be GTL, but I've had a hard time finding an SDS. Today I was finally able to overcome Shell's ridiculously complicated SDS search sheet and connect to an SDS.

Guess what? QS Ultimate Protection is indeed GTL. Much like the Euro 5w40 that is well like on here it's listed as 80-90% GTL on the SDS.

Sweet! The 5w30 I was looking for was not listed, but I was able to download the 5w20. I downloaded the PDF version of the SDS but I can't get it to attach here. I copied and pasted the relevant part I'm referencing. The QS Euro is a smoking deal now it looks like this is too.

I recently emailed Shell to try to confirm this and they emailed me back quickly, confirming that Quaker State Ultimate Protection is GTL based.

It wasn't more than 2-3 weeks ago that another member emailed QS and they said it wasn't.

If I want an oil that's GTL-base, I look for the GTL verbage on the front of the jug. For the past 3-4 years, Pennzoil would plaster GTL name on the front of their jugs.
I've never seen GTL written on any Quaker State jug. If there is GTL in the QS Ultimate oil, it's probably a real low amount.

Yeah I messaged Quaker state a while back and they said they wasn’t.

This is about their Ultimate Protection line of oil, not the basic full synthetic.
Which of course may be correct today, or maybe tomorrow or maybe for a year. But with the base stock interchange rules in API Annex E there is no requirement that they use the same method-of-manufacture Group III stock, only one that meets the VII, saturates and sulfur requirements. There are other hydrocracked Group III bases which meet those requirements besides ones derived from GTL.

Precisely!

What I posted was pertinent to the Ultimate Protection 20k rated oil. With all the naming games that have gone on some are confusing Ultimate Protection with the former Ultimate Durability. Also not the same as the current Full Synthetic.

I don’t know if the others were/are GTL or not. 🤷‍♂️. The Euro is though.
The Quaker State Full Synthetic 5W30 ran very quiet in my Sonata 2.4L GDI engine . My only potential concern with the QS oil was possibly not doing as good a job to prevent varnish as well as Mobil 1 oils (my current choice) . Past Quaker State synthetic oils (SM , SN rated) engine pictures tended to have a yellow / gold color on engine metal parts while engines that ran M1 were varnish free . It’s possible this may longer be the case with SP rated QS synthetic oils but would be curious to know if QS has improved on the engine varnish topic ?

I would say the QS Euro is quite the value, for a really good oil. I see so few engines that have over 300,000 miles in non commercial uses.
