Straight grade oil users

Back in the day, SAE 30 was actually recommended for IDI diesels like the GM 6.2 & Ford 6.9/7.3 non turbo engines. No rubbery VIIs required, didn't have to worry about filling oil pans & valve covers with bouncy black sludge! Most of them only required specs like "SF/CC" or similar (which many gasoline engine oils could meet). Multigrade oils of today provide better starting, and seem to be less shear & sludge prone, but SAE 30 is still a good choice if you can get a good deal on it.

Worked in local Groc/Filling Sta in early 50's. Most folks would say "put in dollars worth gas, gimme quart awl". Unless otherwise specified I'd put in 30w. We had 40w and lord knows what we cranked out of a tank into quart bottles. This was the cheapest. Gas was 15c gal, so was pack of cigarettes. No sure, but seems the oil went for 25c.
