Smartphones have completely changed the way we interact (or lack of), communicate (if you can call it that), and what we perceive as being "social". The use of these gizmos has been the cause of many deaths as well. They are not as innocuous as a TV set in the home or even a Nintendo game in the hand.

All one need do is go to a mall or movie theater and look at others. Rather obvious the huge impact (and not all in a good way) these things have on our society. I consider it's insidious effects more alarming than any other technological device in human history.

Oh, I completely agree. Thanks to the MyRadar app I have on my phone, I waste less time checking the weather and forecast, and more time on my Harleys, boats, trail bikes, kayaks, etc.

Thanks to my Facebook app, I do all of those me frequently with more people involved.

Thanks to the MyFitness app, when I bike, I spend far more time perfecting my breathing, cadence, set speed, routes, route speed, top speed, burn, and distance.

Thanks to the BoatYard app, I have had to open up a dockside services arm of my business that has increased my profits to nearly equal my in-yard services.

78% of my boat rental business comes through the Yelp app, BoatBound, and Google Maps app.

Thanks to the Waze app, I was going 20 mph under the limit, had my high beams on, and eyes glued to the road after a warning that a black couch was scattered across the road ahead of me, instead of colliding with it.

Thanks to the parking apps, I have saved myself from running down to refill the meter, and instead just poke at my smartphone a couple of times and continue to enjoy the party.

I won't even get back into detail on the Facebook app, because if I were to list the stories of how many events, outdoor activities, cultural gatherings, industry events, and all of the friends and connections I have made both professionally and personally within the things I am most passionate about, it would break the forum.

Much like the argument that guns make people into bad people, I would wager that those who act like zombies in front of a smartphone instead of using this powerful tool to it's full potential probably wouldn't have a whole heck of a lot going on whether the smartphone was present or not.

If you feel that smartphones detract from human existence, I would urge you to speak for yourself.

You must have been miserable before smartphones.

And I did speak for myself. And I didn't need an "app" to come to those conclusions.

Of all the apps you have/use this is the only app I use frequently.

First comes the sad attempt to turn the table on me through a assumption and insult, to deflect from the presentation of evidence that smartphones actually are useful and don't automatically detract from one's life.

No, you spoke for all of society, and you didn't use much of anything at all to come to those conclusions besides chronophoia.

Oh please....I'm the OP of this thread. If you didn't like the intent of it (I don't like smartphones and the way most people use them)....then stay out of the thread! You came in here to argue how much you like them. So what...I don't. You don't like my opinion? Again, so what. I didn't "turn" any table on you. You were actually the rude one even when my previous post was basically admitting the good uses of smartphones.
I never said that I spoke for all of society...but I'll be darned if I'll keep my mouth shut about such an insidious and obnoxious thing these smartphones have become. I get it...you need it to find your way in life. Well good for you....I'm just so pleased that you carry the thing everywhere you go and have forgotten the nuances of what it is truly like to be alone and unavailable...to be able to figure things out for yourself...using your own brain instead of the tiny one in the palm of your hand. Geesh...whatever guy.

Now go some place else and finish your whining. Don't forget to take along your pacifier...I mean smartphone.

If you don't like other people offering their own opinions, don't post yours on the internet.

Apparently there is much "what" about it, because you continue to respond.

Rude how? Because I offered a counterpoint to your own opinion?

More baseless insults and assumptions. I think you have a hard time admitting you really don't know the people you judge.

Says the person using his computer to post on the internet.

More whining. Big surprise.

Yes brainiac, I use my DESKTOP to view the internet. But unlike millions today, I don't have a need to carry the internet in my back pocket. I don't become dependent upon stupid "apps" to find my way in every day life. I trust in my own sense of direction and memory....and I enjoy discovering things on my own without the aid of a device 24/7.

How come he gets called a brainiac and I get called an insect? I'm not feeling the love...

Ha ha ha ha...sorry about that!

I only meant "insect" as a term of endearment.

Coming from a person who created a thread to whine about the very same topic?

Are you still throwing more biased assumptions against something you obviously don't use or know anything about?

Agreed. You focus on negative however so much positive out of thee things too. They make my work life so much easier....And so much less time wasted communicating on phone with folks when a couple sentences do. Also no stupid voicemail.

I focus on the things that concern me and my society I am a part of. I realize the tremendous use smartphones can and do have for business use. I take no issue with that and see it as a needed tool in the modern, fast paced world.
It's the use of these devices in place of human interaction and partaking in the real/physical world that is a great concern. We are a nation of blind zombies to anything outside our 4 inch screen. It's become an addiction and dependence upon these things. I think people are MORE stressed partially because of them. We are in essence, slaves to the smartphone and to the companies that provide the access to them.
Just my opinion.

I still don't understand why "society" concerns folks so much. You cannot change it so why complain. Find your happy place and move on?

madRiver...why does society concern people?

Because it is the environment we all share...unless we completely hide away like a hermit or live off the grid...we all must interact and involve ourselves in it. It effects much of every day life....our laws....our culture.
Trust me, if I knew of a better place and could be gainfully employed...I would go there. Interestingly enough, in the past, one COULD seek out different areas in the U.S. where societal/cultural normalities would coincide as a better fit for what people were looking for. That's very difficult today as we have become so homogenous. Same kinds of people...same morals...same influences...etc. Especially with smartphones and the internet being available in your back pocket anywhere in the country.

Are you isolating yourself because smartphones are available EVERYWHERE?
