So, on the odd occasion, I'm getting some noise on start-up. This is primarily when the truck is cold; after sitting overnight for example. It doesn't do it every time. And when it DOES do it, it lasts a few minutes. It also has not done this before.

So, I went to Ford to pick-up an FL-820S to swap in to see if it would eliminate the noise......

And then THIS happened:

When you ask about a volume discount and they give you a pretty good one if you buy a case

$6.00, which is cheap for up here. My Fleetguard filters are almost 16 bucks. AMSOIL ones are 20. K&N's are 18. PureONE's are 18.

For sure!! That is my intention. I will also cut up the Fleetguard.

Yeah I was going to say.

The last time I saw a box ripped open like that was when my 10 year went to town on Christmas...

Comically, that's the way the box is designed to be opened! LOL!

Be interested to hear your results. My son had a startup rattle in his 4.6L when using other than 820S, now it's all he uses and has no start up noise. Of course, he doesn't experience the low temps you do.

Nice stash!

Overkill, did they give you trade pricing, or just a discount?

Also, is the filter mounted vertically on the engine? If it is the anti-drain back valve is of no use.

The filter is horizontal.

I already get trade price, this was an additional discount on top of that.

I had that startup noise with the 820S on my 99. Then went to the P1 and it went away. Now with the Bosch I have no noise either. I was about to pull the trigger on a couple stratapors so please keep us posted

NO. The ADBV works with any orientation - as long as its ON the car.

If the filter is mounted horizontally, the oil cannot drain out unless it can defy gravity and get sucked up and out.

In this configuaration any filter (with or without anti-drain back) is going to work the same.

Anti-drain back is designed to work when the car is off, not on. It keeps the oil from drainingou of the galleries and back to the pan

It's the Mother Load!

So what filter are you presently using that gives start-up noise?

And want are you going to do with all those filters if they don't cure it?

Well, we have two 5.4L's, and a 4.6L that take this filter, along with my BIL's Explorer. So there is no shortage of use for them.

It's not like everybody wants to pony up the $$$$ for the Strapore filters I've been running.

The filter that I took off was a Fleetguard Stratapore. It is the third one on this truck, and the first to make any start-up noise. This is also the truck's first run with M1 0w40. The noise started a couple of weeks ago. Some mornings it does it, others it doesn't. When it DOES do it, it lasts a few minutes before it gradually gets quieter and goes away. For all I know, it could be a sticking chain tensioner...

And when I say minutes, I literally mean it. I start the truck, let it run for about 15 seconds, put it in reverse, back out of the driveway. Hit the turn off of our street, drive a couple blocks up to my son's school, and by the time he's out of the truck and on his way into the school, (this is about 2 minutes time) the noise has gone away.

So, I think I may have found the issue.

ADBV FAIL.

This bucket was basically empty when I put the filter in it, and this is a few hours later:

I could turn over the filter and watch the rest of the oil dribble out of it!

Getting ready to cut:

The cut:

The can: (hey, no grit this time!)

The media:

ALL of the oil that came off of the media while it sat AND what came out of the can when I cut it open:

There wasn't a whole lot left in that can...........
