Sodium

If it is factual that they have, then they must have discovered a magical formula that all the other oil manufacturers, Oak Ridge Labs, Oronite, EPA, SAE, ILSAC, and all other researchers couldn't find, that cancels out their calcium/sodium detergent pack.

To be frank, we have had one poster who says they contacted Valvoline and they said no changes were made. It is all speculation at this point until we have a analysis done. But we do know that VAS is gen 2.

These sodium threads pop up here all the time. Just like changing the oil early on a new car. The only truth is that Valvoline and the other oils that use sodium perform just as well as their moly/boron counterparts. To me it’s just more of the “my brand is better than yours” trolling that rears it’s head here. Oil should be judged on performance rather than ingredients.

I don't disagree.

The issue with sodium is not whether it functions well as a detergent. The issue is the impact it has on LSPI, along with calcium.

Valvoline used to have exceptionally detailed data sheets for their synthetics that actually gave typical calcium and sodium concentrations.
The dexos1 Gen 2 PDS have been pared back quite a bit and don't give us Ca and Na levels anymore, but I did notice that their FS w/Maxlife is an A5/B5 oil...somebody on here was looking for that cert in a d1G2 5W30. Synpower 5W30 also has that combo and they give NOACK loss for that one, pretty good at 9.3%.

Virtus Probi,

I agree. The latest PDS from Valvoline looks really unprofessional and hurried. Most of the info is lacking.

I had a call into Valvoline. I talked to "James" in the Tech part. He said he would have to ask the lab. He just called me back.
James said the lab told him the formula had not changed from d1G1 to d1G2.

He also said the sodium is in there so that they will be able to trace their product! How fascinating!

Now, one thing I realized is that I don't think we actually have a VOA/UOA on the d1G1 Valvoline product, that I can find. So,it maybe that they dropped sodium or calcium in G1 and didn't change it for the G2. I might run a VOA on this myself. This is really interesting.

The pre-Gen 2 PDS on the Valvoline website showed substantial levels of sodium for their 5W30 synthetics, but who knows if those were truly up to date.
I never looked too carefully at other grades, so I'm not sure what was up with them.

That is interesting. They know something we don’t.

Wanna bet that "James" in the Tech Dept. (which BTW is actually a limo driver's name, not a tech guy... suspicious right there) just went out for a smoking break and never actually checked with the lab...

Question: What does "trace" mean? Can I assume that means they know it's their oil when they get a random sample? Not sure.

He called back. He actually got a little testy when I thanked him for calling back. He said "I told you I would."

I don't know exactly what that is for, either. Is someone counterfeiting Valvoline?
