Don't take this the wrong way, but it is my opinion that TooManyWheels & doitmyself are spot on. Going by wrist feel is downright silly to put it bluntly...We use PI torque wrenches at work for nuclear applications. They calibrate/certify fine.
For auto applications I really think that completely ignoring 'wrist calibration' is a little short-sighted, and frankly, a bad idea.
Keep in mind, I own 3 torque wrenches, and yes, I use them on occasion. That said, I've seen a lot of stripped bolts on lower torque applications (bicycles, mainly) by people blindly following the wrench.
Most often, the culprit isn't the wrench itself but the condition of the mating surfaces. In an aerospace environment, a new fastener going into virgin, cleanly tapped threads is an ideal situation--and even then, there's a high degree of variability (upwards of 30%). That rarely exists in a car. Add in the lubrication properties which greatly affect that actual torque a bolt is receiving, and the margin for error can quickly grow to the 50-100% range (or more).
I'm not saying 'don't use a torque wrench', but I think you have to be aware of its limitations, regardless of its cost.
