Small Hatchbacks

Pete, you are right, but doesn't the Focus have a dual clutch automatic? One more unknown to add to the package, and no manual hatchbacks in stock here. We ran out of our window of time today, not sure when the next opportunity will arise.

The Mazda 2.0 and 2.5 in the 3 are not DI engines.

He wrote he drove the hatchback Touring version. Doesn't that one have the 2.0 Skyactive DI engine?

The DI engine is optional on all models of the 3. May not have been the DI engine

My brother likes his MZ3 Skyactiv hatchback. He's getting about 30-32 mpg in city driving. For utility, our Fit wins hands-down, though. The cargo area on the MZ3 is pretty small, and the steep rake to the hatch precludes a lot of larger stuff from fitting in. He's complained a few times that even though it's a hatch it's nowhere near as handy as it should be.

If you want gobs of interior space with a tiny exterior along with decent driving dynamics, get a Fit. If driving dynamics play a larger role than utility, the MZ3 or Focus are the way to go.

Please Mazda, lose the leering grin. Do this:

He didn't say which touring. The S Grand Touring Hatchback comes with the 2.5L, non DI.

Well, he wrote "Touring", not "Grand Touring"

, but maybe he should clarify rather than have us guessing.

Also, if he found the engine uninspiring, that I'm guessing it wouldn't have been the larger 2.5 one.

It was the mazda3 Touring hatchback, with the Sky 2.0 GDI engine. I liked that engine and its automatic transmission just fine, and the handling was very nice, but as others noted above, the interior space is limited.

Car and Driver Rendering.

It has two too many doors but it still screams "shooting brake" to me.
