I'm sure many or most of you that subscribe to Sirius XM already know this, but for those that don't....

I received an email from Sirius XM two months ago advising me that my subscription will automatically renew in August for one year at $23.05 per month. No further reminders of course as most people will forget and not act so far in advance, but I keep it on my calendar. So today I engaged their chat box on their website and said that I would re-subscribe only if I can get the same price I had this past year. I doubt a reason is needed, but I nonetheless said that I only use it in one car and often get drop outs here where I live in the mountains (true), and so their renewal price was not worth it.

Within minutes they came back with a price of $7.35/month including all taxes and fees for the same service for one year, a 68% discount and actually a little below this past year's price.

I do this every year and never have a problem, whether on the phone or through the chat box. The chat box saves me the struggle of dealing with a heavy foreign accent and eliminates much of the small talk. Be sure to keep the renewal date on your calendar. I'm sure they make a fortune on the people who forget until they notice two months of billing at list price on their credit card.

I've been doing the same thing for years, for some reason mine is $6.06/mo. Not sure it's even worth that...my credit card used to reimburses me for it but they stopped that a few months back so I'll probably just cancel since I'm not sure it's worth the hassle.

I've been using the chat box for renewal for a couple years. I just say that I won't pay any more than I did last year and they agree immediately.

My wife and I both drive Mazdas that do not have Sirius XM radios built in. So, we use the app on our phone and stream it to the car. The streaming plan is normally $9.99, but there is a promotion for $4.59 or something like that. I have always stayed at same price. I call the month before renewal and tell them I keep same price or I cancel. Always gotten it renewed at same price.

Let it lapse. They'll mail you offers to renew for super cheap after a couple months.

The trial lapsed on my Genesis last winter and I waited and got a letter from them offering 2 years for $5 a month, no cancellation fees or contract, so I signed up.

I keep getting more of them in the mail every few weeks for the Grand Cherokee I sold my aunt, $3 a month for 3 years!

So ate most customers paying the full price? 80ish vs about $280 a year is a huge difference.

That's going to be my plan also. My service ends in a couple months.

I originally tried to sign up using a Visa gift card, but something in their system apparently didn't recognize it as a "real" card, so I wasn't able to do it. I had figured that would be my fail-safe backup plan.... They can't renew me at full price if my card is all used up!

I get so many letters from them for my Bolt. I never even consider it. The only time I'd consider it is if it was $2/month or less and I didn't have to deal with haggling upon renewal. For the price they want, it's definitely a ripoff - I have CarPlay and a phone with Spotify... that's all I ever want and need.

In order to end the service on my Fathers car when he stopped driving, I found it easier to just tell them he died and that I was a friend letting them know and the car was sold. They asked for my name (to sell me service) and asked who bought the car... I used the chat box and let them know that we resided in California which has a legal requirement for residents to cancel via text.

Good thread here:

AT&T isn't much better. They had raised my DSL service to the point where it was nearly $100 a month. I had been with them for at least 10 years. Finally was able to connect to fiber for $59 a month, and it was 10x faster.

As soon as I called in to cancel the DSL line, they cut it back to $49 a month if I'd stay with them. Nope, sorry.... waaaaay too late for that.

I do the same thing. But as a safeguard if I forget the expiration date, I use a Citi card and generate a virtual CC# that you can set a daily limit and a date of expiration. I set it $1 above the “promo” rate, and to expire in the same month that the promo does. Always ensures I never get hit with the $24 charge if I’m busy the day I needed to renew…

Always find it fascinating to read people set their calendars and invest their limited time to play games with SIRIUS.
It's worth it for me as I like the offerings and listen pretty much every time I drive, especially to the comedy channels. I only get a few radio channels here in the mountains of SW Virginia.

In the West you can go two to three hours without a cellphone nor radio signal. XM shines in this environment. And GON travels the "Great West" and knows this......

I set a reminder, but it's a very short conversation that goes something like this, "This is what I will pay and if we can't agree on that, then cancel my radio." They called my bluff one time, so I said just cancel. About a month later they sent me an offer for 50% of what I was previously willing to pay. It was an offer that I couldn't refuse and it was very nice of them to set up our future negotiations at that price. :)

After on the last vacation where we had no cell service 30-40% of the journey, I let it expire. I cancelled the month before. Now I get a daily email for $5 a month + 63¢ a month in royalties and taxes. Probably didn't listen more than a couple hours a month.
