Right. If there is material worn to create a restriction of that magnitude the damage is done and the trans is in a failing and irreversible situation. A filter with clutch material and magnet loaded with metallic material hopefully salvages the internals for a reasonable overhaul.

You dont have to pull the exhaust down, wedge a block of wood between the trans crossmember and the crossover pipe and pry the pipe down until you can sneak the pan out. Works better with 2 people. The shift cable bracket has torx bolts that come out from the top. Being in rust country I dont touch those exhaust studs unless I absolutely have to
