I have a 2012 Honda Crosstour 2.4L with roughly 4900 miles on the FF, OLM is indicating 60% oil life remaining. Currently down about half a quart, should I top it off now or wait a little longer?

I would tend to agree with you, however thats not with the majority here on Bitog - most will tell you to top off and run your 10k on the factory fill, should be fine either way..

I can't imagine that topping it off would hurt anything, but I've been wrong before. Honda uses special 'break-in' oil, I believe (more moly?) but I don't know if you still need it after 5k miles, nor do I think a top-off of 0.5qt diminish it too much.

How long has it been in? If it's a year or more change it. This is what the manual says "If themessage ‘‘SERVICE’’ does not appear more than 12months after the display is reset, change the engine oil every year"

I didn't want to touch that with a 10' pole, especially since its a Honda. So I took the path of least resistance and suggested topping it up.

Yes a hot topic for sure, but we share the same point of view.

In my opinion,
If in doubt read the instructions from Honda, as the OLM system is reliable. It is one bad idea to change factory fill oil before the manufacturers recommendation, just top it up with the correct oil. Top up oil is the best possible oil additive available for routine use.

I don't tell anyone to follow my ideas, but I would be dumping the FF long before those amount of miles if I bought the car. I leased a car and decided to leave the FF in for 4k miles but it was bothering me. I have always had very good lasting results dumping the FF very early.

As a Honda owner, I would say not to top it off. When it is down to almost a quart, your oil life should be between 20% and 15% (depending if you keep your same driving style) then change the oil then.

This is the approach that I've decided to take. If it goes below one quart low then it will get topped off.
