Should I get a Extended Warranty?

Hello all.

I just bought a 2016 Hyundai Genesis 3.8L with 55K on the odo.

Wondering if it'll be worth it to buy an extended warranty. Plan on keeping the vehicle 5-6 years, with around 110k on the odo.

A part of me just wants to put $100 or so away a month in a savings account to use if anything happens...

Thanks.

On a 10 year old Hyundai, probably. That is, if you can find someone that isnt going to sell you an extremely high deductible extremely circumstantial warranty that they can worm their way out of in their 300 page document.
Yeah, I'm afraid of them weaseling their way out of it. I just read a thread on here about someone getting a denial on their engine because they didn't rotate their tires. The Carchex seems to have a pretty good deductible.

All the tv ads sound good, but from what I have read those warranties are all very conditional.
For the engine you likely have to show all the proper receipts for things like oil changes and other require maintenance items.
Kinda difficult to do on a used car. There in the business to make $ not give it away.
If there is no local office to go to and have them draw pictures "so to say for you" then I wouldn't even consider it.
Every detail of what and what not they cover needs to be shown, and what or what not will allow them to back out of what is supposed to be covered needs to be in big letters.

On that vehicle, absolutely.
Make sure that it is a factory warranty and that it is comprehensive.
There is a member on here that has had two of those used.
He worked the warranty hard on both of the vehicles.

Does it still have any of the 10 year warranty left, were there any extended warranties from the factory for known defects. I would look into a factory extended time warranty but have a hard time recommending any 3rd party service contract. I would rather put whatever the 3rd party charges for coverage in the bank. Many of these companies say they cover parts and labor but they get you on stupid stuff like not paying to drop the engine to get to a part just the actual labor for replacing the part.

I doubt there's going to be a CPO warranty on a 9-year old car.

Assuming it's a third party warranty, there was a thread here where someone explained that the aftermarket warranty company only paid for 'x' amount of labor, so the customer ended up still paying the deductible, and the time that wasn't covered by the company.

I think @bdcardinal explained it?

I probably did. We have had cases where some of the more questionable companies do not pay for a complete repair. If it isn't the one that we sell in addition to Ford ESP, the customer is on the hook for the balance. We have had cases where they won't pay for any chemicals, and will not pay for RTV sealant and say to just re-use it. Ford is very particular with how they want repairs done and replacing one time use parts, if the fly-by-night insurance won't pay for it, someone has to and it isn't us.

We just had one where someone's insurance paid for all the external parts to replace an engine, but supplied their own and declined our handling fee. The engine showed up and since parts makes nothing on the engine, they got to unload it themselves. FWIW the engine was delivered to us in the pouring rain, ziptied to a pallet, and not covered whatsoever.

My concern with a used Hyundai is that it likely will be impossible to prove it had the required frequent oil changes before you bought it. That leaves lots of wiggle room to deny any responsibility for an engine failure, and that's the biggest reason you want an extended warranty.

So I'd pocket the money and pay for whatever comes up. There is a good chance you would anyway.

I'd get the warranty, but first, reach out to member @Nick1994 who has experience with repairs on a couple of Genesis sedans. Here is one of his Genesis threads on BITOG:

Yup, that’s the thread to the current one. Read through it @dan765 and the one I have linked below, to my first Genesis.

They’ve been a real doozy. Absolutely love them though, but not own-able without a good warranty.

I'm generally against them. A factory backed one, especially if buying as a CPO and it's extending the warranty out to something to help one sleep better at night, or at least overlapping the period of payoff... that can be tempting. But on a 9 year old car? I'd rather pocket the money.
