Here, two nights before Christmas, they had one cashier operating, with a similar number built to what you quoted.

I won't go near those things. Human contact is already at a perilous low in these times, and I much prefer the people in my community to have jobs.
my whole life i hated standing in line. now iam retire. now i go to the G store only on week days in the late morning, i do not get up before 10. am, and never on monday. and NEVER use selfcheck out.

I dont use them if it is not advantageous. Often times Ive found it not.
The systems often screw up, asks for verification or something that I cannot do myself anyway.
Often in some stores there are more people at the self checkouts then at the manned ones. Why wouldnt I use them? It gives someone a job and is faster.
I doubt that prices are rising at a perceivably slower rate because of self-checkouts....

I refuse to use them. I'd rather have a paid employee running the checkout. I've had Home Depot and Harris Teeter employees try to steer me to the self checkout and i always refuse, stating I'd rather wait in line than use that!

^^Absolutely! I went to HEB tonight and bought $200 worth of groceries. Checker was very friendly and pleasant,and obviously liked her job and customer interaction. Sacker was just as friendly and offered several times to carry my gf`s and my groceries out to our car.

^^Absolutely! I went to HEB tonight and bought $200 worth of groceries. Checker was very friendly and pleasant,and obviously liked her job and customer interaction. Sacker was just as friendly and offered several times to carry my gf`s and my groceries out to our car.
We should be charged less than at a 'full service' register.
We get no pay, health benefits, pension, etc..
The self serve islands can be quick, but when there is a problem, we are hosed.

That's funny. I avoid human contact to the greatest extent possible. It's amazing how much easier a day is when you don't have to deal with anyone.

Given that most of my workmate's children were checkout attendants, and I would always preference those shops, and that my children at some stage in their working lives will start in similar positions, I always go to the manned checkouts locally.
I've noticed in the cities 'though, that they are making it really difficult to work out how to even enter the queues, or making a single zig-zag line that everyone has to traverse to get to "the next available operator"

The only time and place I use them is Hannaford, because I'm usually only there to pick up <5 things and it's faster. In general I use the normal checkout lines though. Not to mention, Minimum wage or not, those are still jobs.
I use them all the time for simple purchase, but they don't always work because:
1) those darn "Just for U" coupons aren't updated to self checkout as fast as the regular cashiers.
2) mistakes in weight in their database
3) difficulties looking up codes for non barcode items
4) need "to wait for assistance" when something isn't quite right (wrong price, different flavor of the same item combination between buy 1 get 1)
I usually use it only if I'm buying simple items, and when I see problems I take them back to my cart and go to the cashiers instead of "wait for assistance". It is the future when the finally fix the problems, and the scary thing is they may monitor these self checkout from Mexico or India, and leave 1 or 2 manned cashiers in the entire store.
Warehouse like Costco or Sam's may just use RFID instead of self scanning barcode and upsize their packaging.

That's what happen here too, they rip their self checkout because it is too slow (usually all cash registers are staffed during peak hours).

Usually there is one "associate" for every four self checkouts. I've never been in a Wal-Mart at any time where more than half of the registers were open, so if they can at least make it more efficient that's fine with me.
