I am looking to get a 1911 and want to get either a Dan Wesson Specialist or a Colt either a Competition, Gold Cup Trophy or Gold Cup Lite. I would like to get in 9mm as my other gun is in that caliber. I go to range a few times a year. Price difference between them is not a factor. Just looking for a no headache firearm to take to range occasionally. I was really leaning toward the DW but had seen some reviews they were problematic specifically not going back to battery due to their tight clearances.

Much better choices in other 9mm guns, No need for 1911 if you're gonna limit it to 9mm. Besides- 45 acp cause we're not on the metric system lol

Those are both good choices if you want a 9mm 1911. I'd choose whichever you liked most. I'm of the opinion if you're just going to have 1 1911 it should be a Colt. A gold cup 45 is on my list at some point.

I have a Dan Wesson Guardin and a Colt Competition... Both in 9mm.

The Wesson is a better looking gun.
It is a commander.
It is also a little finicky about ammo.

The Competition is a govt.model in SS.
I have never had a issue with it.

For a range toy either one would be fine.

When buying a Colt I prefer to handle it first.
The quality could be spotty at one time.
It may have cleared up in the last few years.

What ammo do you use in the DW

When I first got it, it would have FTEs a lot.
(Failure to eject)
I adjusted extractor tension and smoothed the hook on the extractor a little.
It's not having issues with most ball ammo but for some reason it jut doesn't like PMC.

I have moved to S&B for range ammo.

Both Dan Wesson and Colt are now owned by CZ, i haven't bought a CZ Colt but my prior experience is that its the better pistol.

I have a number of Super 38 Colts with 9mm barrels and have no trouble with them.

Ive had 3 or 4 Dan Wesson's and they have all been problem children.

Colt will follow original dimensions, DW does not unless they have changed. DW will be tighter but tighter isn't necessarily better.

If i were going to buy one right now it would probably be a 9mm Gold Cup National Match (not Lite).

A 9mm steel 1911 is very pleasant shooting and light recoil with standard ammunition.

I'd also encourage you to access whether you really want things like front strap checkering, i personally don't care for it.

My DW RZ-45 Razorback “Heritage” (all stainless Govt model) is probably my favorite pistol.

Absolutely love it.

No reliability problems.

gold cup colt end of story.
I have a Gold Cup and a DW that I really don't know the model but the DW is a 1000 times better in every way over the Gold Cup. One on my friends is a 1911 lover and has 10 Colt 1911s all done up and two Wilson Combats and says the DW I have shoots just like the Wilson combats. I have done minor work on both my 1911s to get then 100% operating to my liking. All my friends never ask for me to bring the Gold Cup for them to shoot, they always ask for the DW. The best 1911 i have though is my WW II 1911 I got 50 years ago, nicer and bit more accurate than the Gold Cup [ I tightened up the slide and fitted a new barrel bushing in it She is my baby.]
