Saw someone walk out of Lowes without paying

I seen someone walk out of Home Depot with a chain saw once. He grabbed it off the shelf and headed out the door as fast as he could. They have a policy that once it’s out the door the employees can’t say anything. My mom used to work at Big Lots and Kmart and that was their policy too. You have to just write it off. I think if it’s over a certain amount she said they could report it if they got the vehicle info but other than that it’s nothing. The reason that policy is in place is to protect the worker it’s not worth risking your life over someone else not making a smart choice. You never know if they maybe hiding a weapon somewhere on them or not. My mom said if they did go after them then that was automatic termination. That’s what my friend that works at Home Depot said is the policy there too.

It is not a good business model to kill your customers by mistake, even if you are right 99.99% of the time.
Should have thrown a /s in there for sarcasm on my post.

However . When I was in College. Eons ago.. a professor threw out a thought challenge exercise. Went through a whole scenario of someone on probation, etc etc. Caught twice, stealing etc. Got caught a third time. Was in programs, getting help, etc.. your typical both sides of the coin, as muddy as possible thought exercise. So, when he asked, "What should happen to the shoplifter" or probation violator. How long they should receive, in this thought exercise scenario.. However it was phrased.. there was one older gentleman, always answered, "For the rest of their life."

I chuckled and thought it sarcasm, but, if you think about all extremes, I think I do see the point.. In the grand sceheme of things, it is not that serious.

Again, my post about shoot to kill was sarcastic humour.

Nothing new. Cheaper to have minimal security staff.
If the shoplifter looked like a 400 lb defensive lineman, there is the possibility there would have been no yelling at all.

When the corp policy / insurance company said do not try to stop the theft and you have a 400lb defense lineman.

I know, but to be honest, some security needs to have shoot and kill (I.e. armored money carrier, prison transfer bus) or else you bet people will try to rob them. The key is to make sure this is as far away from other people as possible so you cannot shoot the wrong person. Even if you try to rob a diamond jewelry store you would not want a place with security guard try to shoot the robber next to innocent customers.

This is yet another reason we start seeing no cash store / restaurant, because dealing with money is messy in security and accounting. This is also why you see insurance companies' cars all said "drivers carry no cash", unless it said "our drivers carry more cash" as a funny ad / joke.

Back in my retail days,we had these creatures run out of the store with handfuls of expensive high end clothes. Our supervisor on duty went after them. They got into their car and purposely ran her over. She got up,pulled the driver out of the car,and gave him the beat down of his life. Fuzz got there, and their car was full of stolen merchandise. They’d gone on a “shopping spree” that day.

Yep,she was tough!! And she was everyone’s favorite supervisor.

This is what you meant to say....

"The reason that policy is in place is to protect the company in case an employee "hurts" a shoplifter and sues.

I really do believe it's more so the proliferation of cameras and video recordings than a downturn in morals.
Not sure what you really mean, so can you elaborate on this? IMO, it seems like society is going backwards in terms of acting appropriately and people seem to think they can just do anything they want (including breaking laws and rules) with no ramifications. Is it a deterioration in the logic section of the human brain, or something else going on.

7-Eleven and other convenience stores have the same policy. Some famous news stories years back described 7-Eleven employees chasing and tackling shoplifters running from the store, then getting fired for it.

People have always behaved this way. It's the proliferation of camera phones video equipment like RING etc that's now catching them in the act. That's what I meant with the previous post.

Sure more people are getting caught doing this stuff because of cameras, etc ... but IMO more people are also doing it because of the increasing degradation of society.

was at lowes today getting some shower parts. while in line a woman with a weedeater just walks out without paying. the cashier yells at her but she just keeps on walking. all of us in the line were amazed, but what amazed me more was what the woman that was paying said. She said" if you guys are going to let her just walk out without paying, why should i pay for this stuff". this kind of attitude towards theft was interesting .
It seems that now days people don't want to get involved anymore, I would have went out and grabbed the weedeater and brought it back in. Couple of days ago a lady was getting her purse robbed by a homeless man and people just stood around filming with their phones, this was on the evening news, same with the asians getting sucker punched and people stand around letting it happen, caught on camera was a small female bailiff escorting a prisoner out of court and he turned on her trying to get her gun, two guys who witnessed it turned and ran, an older gentleman walked out the same courtroom saw what was happening and grabbed the prisoner around the throat till other bailiffs came running to assist. I don't find it interesting I find it cowardly.

The sense of entitlement seen nowadays like never before.

Because shoplifting and retail theft is a crime and it raises the prices of products to everyone else.

Cost of doing business that the retailer needs to manage to. Additional sales staff on the floor, securing valuable merchandise, electronic security tags, cameras, loss prevention folks...let them do their jobs - as a customer I am not getting involved. For all we know, they followed the thief on CCTV and got the license plate of the car and have a close working relationship with the local police department.
