Mama Bear and I are planning a short getaway at the end of February and thinking about driving up the Eastern Seaboard (Savannah, Charleston, Myrtle Beach etc)

Anyone live in/near Savannah that could recommend good/not too expensive accommodations there. Is the Trolley a good way to see the town? What would you do/see there in a couple of days?

TIA

Bob (Papa Bear)

Papa Bear -

We stopped in Savannah for a couple of days last July. We arrived in the afternoon, so we drove over to Tybee Island and had dinner. It's a nice little beach town about 20 minutes east of Savannah.

The next day we took a tour with Oglethorpe Trolley Tours. It was nice way to initially see the city. They have a ton of pickup/dropoff points that you can use all day if you want to then explore the city on foot. You just call the office, tell them where you are, and they send a van/bus to pick you up. We ate lunch at Paula Deen's restaurant, The Lady & Son. The rest of the day, we just wondered around, taking pictures and sampling candy on River Street.

We stayed in a Residence Inn a few miles south of the historic district. It was a short drive to the city center, but about half the price as historic district hotels. All of the trolley tour companies offer free parking, so you don't have to worry about being in the middle of it all.

It's methy mouth Bethy!

The Planters Inn is a great place to stay...it's right beside the market, which used to be an old slave market in Savannah. Even if you don't stay there drop in to they're restaurant and get a big slice of they're coconut cake. Browse through the market, they sell the most beautiful hand made baskets... but haggle on the price as they will negotiate on the pricing. We took a tour on an old paddle wheel boat which was fun as well...and get them to tell you the story of the 'waving woman' whose statue is next to the harbor. Oh...and be sure to eat at the Pirate House as well.

Papabear...Edit...the missus just refreshed my memory, as the Planters Inn and the old slave market is in Charleston, LOL. The rest,ie the paddle wheel and the Pirate house restaurant is in Savannah. I had a senior moment!

Hilton Head Island is pretty cool. Been there during the summer a few times but not this time of year.

http://www.intellicast.com/Local/Weather.aspx?location=CAXX0546 We won't be above freezing in the foreseeable future and I'm sure Savannah will be an improvement by March 1.

Thanks:
Bob

You can drink on the street there. You can order a beer 'to go', or if you have a pint of it and want to leave, there's plastic solo cups by the door for you. Also, hit up some hole in the wall place and get some low country boil.

I got this (the left platter) at Bobo's seafood market for like $7. It's ridiculous. The place is kinda in the not so good area, so a man will probably try to sell you TVs. But lots of places sell low country boil.

Also, take a drive on Victory Drive on the way to Tybee Island. Just drive on that road.

Oh yes! My place of birth... My sil reported 37" of snow this year, and that was before the last storm. We will be passing through Monroe next month, on our way to another sil's place out in the boonies just south of Cadillac. Brrrrrr...

Hey, I didn't realize you are that close. We should see about getting together this summer when we come up...

Stay warm,

Wayne
