I guess there have been calls to do it for years, but with controversies over a federal mandate to keep it open given that the feds transferred some land. Obviously the same concerns about neighborhood safety and noise. However, the plans might have been delayed by worries about what would happen to the land, where now it’s going to be kept as an open space area rather than developed.

They have tried to be good neighbors with those that live near by. But in the end-even light aircraft make noise. And the flights in/out are primarily for recreation. If the land were to be used for residential-they would have been worth millions-depending on size of course.

Love when people buy homes near airports and then complain about the noise as if they were there first. Classic.
Unfortunately noise is not being used as the primary issue as it once was (even though its really the underlying issue for most people who move into know flight paths). Here in Colorado they are attacking general aviation airports by claiming leaded fuels are polluting the sky's around them. They can get into the courts easier using EPA regs than FAA ones. Complainants have been somewhat successful in arguing that the FAA has a conflict of interest as their job is to more or less protect airports. If they win on pollution they win on both fronts.

It's rather close to Los Angeles International Airport... about 5 miles away.

The two are worlds apart in character and function.

And 5 miles distance in LA should be taken in "dog years" in travel terms compared to other places.

In general, I have no sympathy for those who don't take into account the existing land uses of an area they move into.

But OTOH, a century of development doesn't mean that an airport, power plant, factory, or whatever nuisance that was there first, retains a perpetual right to remain in that location when the prevailing use of the lands surrounding it have changed.
