I am curious also that he applied the emergency brake. Now I am not familiar with the prius, but would the emergency brake not lock up the rear wheels. I know that I used to use the e-brake to do drifts around corners when I was young and foolish. Also I was reading that ABC news admitted to tinkering with thier Toyota report. hmmm, interesting

Wow, Toyota really dug up some dirt on this guy and "released" it through the media.

rudolphna, if things were going smoothly and no emergency you could dial 911 but in an emergency you would not be able to. You are concerned about other things and there is only seconds to react. Unless you have been in a life or death situation you do not know how you would react. Some people still have old fashioned cell phones and they might be in a purse or pocket.

And with the rise of the BlackBerry/iPhone/Android which do not use traditional keypads, it's difficult to use one and drive - imagine how much harder it would be under duress. I dare someone to touch-type on an iPhone or a Android-based phone. It's impossible since they both use touchscreens.

Are you serious... no argument just curious.
No mechanical link neutral? Wow !!!
Now that's just asking for trouble.
What were they thinking???

(Caution sarcasm ahead)

Somebody wake me up and tell me this is GM's fault.

Prius drive train works on a planetary gear-set, with the engine on the planetary carrier, an AC motor/generator on the sun gear, and a much larger motor/generator on the ring gear.

Drive is obtained by controlling the speed of two electric motors, and a petrol engine.

Neutral is (as far as I can ascertain), two AC motors in an unpowered condition, i.e. freewheel.

So things are still spinning in neutral, but there's no actual disconnect.

Because an anonymous tipster says he is five months behind on his lease payments that makes it true?

Like a lot of other things about this, that really doesn't have the ring of truth to it, either. Most secured creditors get depreciating property back pretty quick after a default to minimize their loss. Bankruptcy doesn't affect that much - you can get the stay lifted and get your property back. It's pretty routine.

So the guy is allegedly broke, drives a leased car, has some debt, some bankruptcies, may have ties to the porn industry, and has a lawyer and might be angling for a big payout. Is that even unusual for SoCal?

BTW, bankruptcy filings are public and anyone with a Pacer account can access them, and most other federal court records, online. They're not some big secret.

This is a good time to buy a Prius. You can probably get an excellent deal on one and there's about a 99.99999% chance you'd never have any problems with it.

I thought all Priuses came with brake over ride and the pedal problem only effecting NA cars, not Japanese made cars such as the prius? The story of the guy from CA just isnt adding up. He is a corvette owner and thinks putting the car in neutral may flip it. How could a car enthusiast possibly think that? The corvette owners group disowned him and they want his jacket back.
