Has anyone ever had the rubber gasket stick to the filter mounting face? Does it happen to you often? Are particular vehicles or filters prone to this happening?

It has only happened to me once when I was helping a friend change the oil on his Dodge Caravan. The filter was on there for almost 20,000 km and it was an OEM brand filter (Mopar?). After I pulled the gasket off the mounting face, I replaced the filter with an orange can.

Yes. Always need to check that you got it off.

Recommended to a guy at work to use a Supertech for his car. The second time he used it the gasket stuck and he installed the new filter...with the old gasket still on. Oil leaked out and he ended up wrecking the engine. I don't recommend stuff like that anymore....

Did he blame you?

If you work in a service garage you will see it annually at least. Since you are supposed to lightly lubricate the gasket on the new filter before installing..... I always just put it face to face with the old one and transfer the oil directly by contact. Of course it is immediately obvious when its not there! Just a good, helpful habit.

Incidentally, I think ALL the gaskets can be removed easily with your fingernail, have never noticed any that are really bonded.

...and here I thought this was a Ford thing.

Yep. 89 Chevy C1500 4.3L Vortec. Driving along I'd hear the strangest sound. Like somebody tossing a bucket of water on the truck. It was the double gasketed filter building pressure, then forcing oil out 1/4 qt at a time. Wasnt showing up in the driveway, only driving under pressure so I didn't notice it for a while. Fortunately I found it down only 2 qts and it was ok. Newer filters don't seem to do that today. But I'm always looking after that.

Have never done this or seen it done to be honest.

I tend to use clean oil on the new seal aswell.

Do the people that have experienced this are they the kind that drops the old filter in the drain pan?

As it seems a very obvious thing to check.

If you do it you are either rushing or careless.

Exactly. Take time to clean the mounting base and you'll never do a double gasket move.

It happens occasionally, though as mentioned if one cleans (best practice) the gasket mounting surface on the engine after filter removal it shouldn't be an issue.

And afaik, there's no specific correlation to filter brand for this occurrence.

In 40+ years of changing oil, I've changed a lot of oil filters and I have never had a gasket stick to the block(guess I'm lucky).

Problem solved

I always do that, my mechanic does that too when I was lazy to change oil myself.

For me it happens more often than I'd like it to. The first time it happened I must have been distracted and DIDN'T wipe off the filter mount. Well, you know what happened after I put everything together and started the car, don't you?

It probably happens at least every 3rd or 4th oil change. I believe it's because I tend to want to over tighten it, and when I spin it off at change time it likes to stick to the filter mount.

Sure enough, I since then ALWAYS remember to visually check and wipe the area down.

Same here. Happened with a Wix.

Dont wipe it off. That just takes the oil off and makes it more app to stick. Just look at the filter when you take it off. If the ring is there you are good.
