Right, but you can refer to 0W-20, 0W-30, 0W-40 and 0w50 as 0W oils. And the same goes for 5W, 10W, 15W and 20W oils. Formulators often due since the base oils used to formulate 0W oils have a limited molecular weight. Same goes for 5W oils which as a group are made from heavier base oils than 0W oils etc. The final number of an SAE grade with multi-grade oils is largely determined by the VMs and VIIs used in the finished oil.

No one knows. The RP website does not say, and the RP emails sometimes quoted here do not definitively state that their oils contain only Group IV and V, or that they do not contain Group III. The same is true for Amsoil. Try to pin them down and they'll play the proprietary card and wiggle away.

In the absence of evidence, people tend to believe what they want to believe or what they are told. Unless you have a gas chromatograph you'll have to rely on their statements. Just read their wording very carefully.

Exactly. 0W, not "zero weight."

Very well said, as always.

OVERK1LL,
Yes, I did pull the cam cover when I did the TB at about 140k-145k miles. It looked fine.. I'm bumfuzzled. It was spotless, I do mean spotless inside the motor were the cams are.

Then regardless of what the used oil analysis said, your engine was fine

Please don't think this.

Don't forget Motul.

+1

My biggest problem with RP is their blatent lack of information readily available for the consumer to read. It states on their website to call their number to find out the specs for each oil. Honestly, that is more of a hassle for me then ordering redline online or going to a buddies speed shop to pick it up. I want to be able to easily compare the viscosity indexes, Hths values, noack values, etc. The simple fact that RP doesn't readily disclose this data is a huge turn off for me. If they did disclose and published their data; I would use it likely if it truly out performed redline, amsoil, or motul. Until they let me see it's tech specs...I won't be buying it.

In fairness, just about every oil company out there has something that I would characterize as severely deficient in their spec sheets. RP's spec sheets are available, but hard to find and lack certain details. SOPUS has some that are downright wrong. XOM keeps the old ones up far too long, including for long discontinued products (great idea to have the sheets still available, but perhaps label them as discontinued). Castrol's sheets are worse than useless. Ashland doesn't always make a clear distinction between meeting a spec and actually being approved against it.

Besides, even an accurate spec sheet is just that. It doesn't necessarily outline whether an oil will outperform another (assuming it's an apples to apples comparison) in all facets. Do you want more ZDDP? Less? Do you want a high VI? Do you want something closer to a straight grade? There are plenty of issues, of course.

I am still thinking Royal Purple with Auto RX in it as the oil for the Volvo.

Royal Purple is a good oil... some just don't like it.

API SM Royal Purple 0W-40 with Synerlec, anyone? As good an oil as any out there. The SN is probably fine, even 0W-40.. the whole sticky point is, that it is priced ~! the same as Redline.

A final oddity is that Royal Purple states that "The Royal Purple sold at Walmart is there without their knowledge" on their website, yet I can go in Walmart and spent the same on RP 5w30 and 10w30 (the only two grades available) as I can on GC at Autozone, $9 a quart............... ... which, is why, I will likely be mixing GC with Supertech.

"Although Royal Purple oil formulations are considered proprietary, I am authorized to share with you that we use a proprietary combination of premium synthetic Group IV(PAO) and Group V base stocks. The additive packages are also the very best available for each."

I do agree with pretty much everything you said. That's all I'm saying that just looking at spec sheets doesn't tell the whole story. However, RP is a high end oil though and when we are talking about spending over $9.00 a quart; I would like to be able to compare the spec sheets. It sure would make me feel better about spending that much money. I've used RP before and I believe it to be a good product...I just didn't know how good; so I switched to redline for those applications.

I have never used Auto-RX but have read about it. As I recall you are not supposed to run it in synthetic oil? I would check with Auto-RX and make sure before spending all that money on oil and product.

I see nothing odd about RP's statement about them not selling directly to WalMart. Actually, your price comment backs that up. If RP was selling directly to WalMart they( RP )would have been beaten up on to sell it to WalMart at a lower price thus allowing them( WalMart )to sell it in their stores for less than the competition. That is how WalMart does business( not condemning them for it ). RP sells for the same at WalMart as regualr synthetics for the most part. That tells me thhey are not getting it from RP directly. If they were the price would be lower.

How does this compare in price to RL and AMSOIL?

Apples to Apples. all three are equal in my book.
