2025 Kia K4 and 2023 Jeep Gladiator.

Royal Purple HPS is a different oil blended to a higher spec over the pcmo ,both are fine oils for a specific market need, the pcmo is a competitive oil to other SQ,GF-7 brands and is not considered inferior, though more pricey, myself I can find better oils at Walmart ,only to fit my needs & there is no reason not to use RP oil, stop the usual bashing other oils than Mobil 1 ,which is a good oil too. Mobil 1 is not the only player on the market.
Good point. I knew the API RP was more geared at warranty compliance over performance/max protection. Not that the API is bad but for the price I'd agree you have options just as good. HPS and XPR is there creme of the crop oil.

Not saying there isn't possibly better out there but I like trying to use an oil for everything so its just easier if I ever need to top off etc. With my car I'm looking to possibly either do the extended protection Valvoline 5w30 or the European 0w30/5w30. Don't feel the HPS is buying me anything more on it.

The truck I'll likely do another UOA at 3 to 4k see how numbers shake out with having a baseline. If its still the same or worse probably go 0w30 or 0w40 Valvoline European. The Kia 2.0 MPFI variant I know is solid with good OCI'S.

The 3.6 I worry about more given the rocker needle bearings that prematurely wear out and ruin cams. My thinking is European oils concentrate more on valvetrain wear so it'll be the best I can do. That's why I initially choose HPS with the SJ levels of ZDDP.

Also liking the stout HTHS and viscosity index of the European spec oils. Having less potential shear is always a plus as you get the best possible film strength and boundry lubrication.

Film thickness, not film strength.

And how do you know that the VII used in an oil is especially resistant to shear?

Well it's a good indicator along with the added HTHS as it goes in hand. Lower VI index will usually shear the most especially on higher viscosity spreads like a 0w40 or 5w50 etc.

Well if your motor runs quieter and the used oil analysis shows normal or even below that I'd say its measured really good.
Right. Good thinking.

But I'm still a bit confused as to what you look at on the used oil analysis that gives film strength? And what's a normal value?

Nothing that actually gives a definitive answer but the main thing I'm looking at is copper, chromium and iron. If that looks good or better than good I'd say film strength has to be stellar because the name of the game is keeping metal surfaces from touching as much as possible from a wear standpoint.

Looking at the physical properties HPS looks stout as hell though compared to 5w30 Valvoline European 3X. Will certainly re test to validate it all though.

Man if you can tell that an oil is "stout as hell" from a listing of typical values on a PDS you're doing something.

What values are you looking at specifically? Flash point? Pour point?

Not saying its guaranteed but just by numbers not many others look that good. Of course a used oil analysis will be more definitive as if you're not testing your trusting.

I trust the approvals an oil has way before I trust an untrained interpretation of a $35 spectrographic analysis. But maybe that's just me.

Comparative quality testing between oils is an expensive and complicated test, for a reason.

On the 2.0 Kia MPFI looking at either the 5w30 restore and protect, european XL3 5w30 or 5w40 european. Would the 40 operating viscosity be too thick for that motor? Really liking the european route but if it don't help then no reason to use.

Did the second change at 2k and 2500 on motor. I watch Lake Speed Jr alot on YouTube and he was right about the magnetic drain plug. It's amazing what it captured. Never would think it would be that amount. Gonna run this oil 3500 or so dump and again then sample for a baseline. Really like the Kia K4 solid vehicle for the money.
