Royal Purple or Mobil 1

Why replace a true synthetic with more or less a synthetic blend for the same price.

I thought that it was a "true synthetic." Correct me if I'm wrong here. I just want the best 5w20 synthetic oil that is readily available. Pennzoil Platinum and Royal Purple are available around here. Also what is with the opinion on Rp here everyone has different thoughts on this oil. Is pennzoil platinum a better choice. I want a 5w20 for warranty reasons, but I also drive the car hard on occasion. I know that a lot of mustang guys run this oil (RP) and swear by it.

Are you saying that the hydrocracked Castrol Syntec is inferior to PAO based Mobil 1 as applied to the motor oils?
If you are then you're wrong. Each one is great in its own way.

PP would be the better choice for the money.

Or if you want a premium oil, why not Redline. It is a true synthetic for sure.

RP has been truly known as a true synthetic yet.

Well.....not by the threads I have read.

There is no such a thing as "the best" synthetic.
Some engines might "prefer" one oil over another.
It's all very tricky "science".
The oil composition is a proprietary info which is generaly not being disclosed by a blender.
The blenders do change their components quite often depending on various factors such as: price, availability, standards etc.
The oil formulas of today might significatly differ from what is available in the stores tommorow.
Therefore the saga for searching for the "best oil" is mostly just a waste of time since nobody on this board can garantee the accuracy and repeatability of their findings.
With some few exeptions like GC that's been studied to death and analyzed mulitipe times over a period of time.
My advice: buy a reputable brand that is currently on sale.

there really is no answer to what synthetic is best. you can really go wrong with the motor oils on the market today, most of them are excellent choices. search around using "5w-20" or something similar and youll find a lot of info.

I called and talked to them today, I was told that they were group 4.

Also what is the difference in the additive package between GF3 and GF4?

if i remember correctly, gf3 oils had higher calcium and zddp levels. that has dropped with gf4.

What group is pennzoil platinum? Is it better than Royal Purple or Mobil 1 5w20? How is pennzoil platinum on engine wear? Since I am only going to run it for 3000 oci it probably won't matter much.

just bought 7 quarts of 5w20 Pennzoil platinum at 5.39 a quart!

I won't argue which oils are best... but? What's the point if you have to hunt down the oil in the first place?

I've checked five places today. From Napa to Pep Boys. All stores said they don't sell much Royal Purple and would need to special order.

If the oil is that good... wouldn't there be a demand for it? I think Royal Purple is a fine oil. I just feel there are other "equal" more readily available oils out there. For less money too.

That's crazy too! Maybe us "BITOG" folk are too anal about our oil huh? Sometimes I wish I could just use whatever was on sale. Like Laundry detergent.

I wonder how long your engine would last with Advance auto parts oil in it. That stuff reatils for 95 cent a quart! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA
