Royal Purple...how does it compare?

Royal Purple seems like the boutique oil of Walmart. Ive always been a little suspicious of it and understand it uses a cheaper base stock than Amsoil. Amsoil is a very well made high quality oil which does not spare the expense. I would run it myself but I simply cannot justify the price. The Royal Purple isnt cheap but its a little better at nearly 10 per quart versus 15 per quart for Amsoil.

If you run Royal Purple can you post some used oil analysis? How does it compare to other oils? I enjoy watching Amsoil, HPL and RedLine go all out to make the best oils known to mankind. Hats off to them and maybe one day I might buy it. Im just wondering if Royal Purple is truly in the "boutique oil" club or is it simply another Walmart discounted rollback thing... Should I stick with the good ole silver Mobil 1 bottle or trade off to the purple bottle?

I'll take mobil over rp any day of the week. I don't see how it's worth the extra cost. But if one were to run rp in an engine that at minimum meets what it recommends and changes accordingly or sooner the engine will last but the same can be said about SP supertech syn blend.

The Royal Purple at Walmart is nothing special from what I understand. Others have mentioned they do have high end offerings elsewhere. I’ve personally never used it.

It may have changed but I remember it being the same as Valvoline synthetic in voa’s and used oil analysis.

I did find a recent UOA. Judging by the age of the used oil analysis RP was big.on this site over 15 years ago.

API RP is just fine motor oil. Their best oils are not API. They are the ones labeled, HPS and HMX.

in my experiences with (pcmo) Royal Purple is positive, and yes, it is a good oil, only way I would use it is when it is on sale, though Amsoil is a much better choice even over Mobil 1 which I think is just ok. the RP high performance street (HPS) oil is one of the best oils out there, most people that criticize a product like Royal Purple or whatever need to look at the results of the product, and look past the marketing and opinions.

What did it for me was around the time this group started I was seeing a bunch of used oil analysis where it thinned out fast. I ended up being sent a free case by RP to test it out myself in my ex wife’s 2000 Civic. Even after only 2400 miles, with no fuel dilution, it thinned out from a 5w30 to a 5w20. That engine never thinned out any other oil that I ran in it. And even though it was a long time ago, I have never seen anything since then about it that led me to believe it was anything special. There are cheaper oils that get better results.

I have a few jugs of 5w30 (regular Dexos approved PCMO) that I got on sale and with a mail in rebate. Otherwise I don't think it's worth the price. Kind of fun that it's purple. Smells a bit weird. Comes out black like any other used oil. Their HPS and HMX oils seem to be held at a higher regard, though. Their transmission and diff fluids are also talked about positively from what I can tell.

Slightly off topic, but I'm tempted to mix some Liqui Moly Ceratec with RP just to see what kind of unholy colour that would produce.

I had heard what took RP down badly was that the company was sold , probably over 15 years ago and the company that bought them started messing with the original RP oils and it is not anywhere near the original. Not sure about their racing products.

At the time they didn’t have the HPS version, they just had a street version and a “race” version back then IIRC

it would have been the HPS formula then. The PCMO API SM+ rated oils came later and then they called the original formula HPS.

Gucci Valvoline

I'm not a fan. It's not bad, per say, but it's nothing special. It's essentially Valvoline with purple dye.

They've also had ethical integrity issues under Calumet.

It did change. RP was a very robust, highly additized oil but had an older API rating to accommodate it, and people screamed "it was behind the times". Then in response, RP reformulated it to meet the latest (at that time) API rating, and haters screamed "they watered it down".

RP has never got the respect it earned and deserved. People who never used it irrationally hated it. Crazy.
