Road Rage

Last summer I was caught at the last light going out of a little town. While waiting for the light, one of those too good to wait his turn types came up the right turn lane, planning to beat me at the light. Likely he didn't expect much trouble out of the old people in the Cavalier. Well, I get sick of that crap. As I was approaching the red line in second gear, he was approaching a mail box, and had to back off.

I had the reverse of labman's situation, but the guy in the Mustang was a jerk. I would have been happy to let the Mustang to first (far be it from me to try outrunning a Mustang in a 3.0 Aerostar
lol.gif
), but the guy in the Mustang pulled out from the light very slowly and I either had to creep of pull ahead, and so I pulled ahead with what gusto the Aerostar could muster. Then the guy in the Mustang closed the gap and would not let me in. I had to brake hard (no squeel though) for the lane ran out. Some people get a sporty car and then if they can't stand anyone to pass them, they should get *** moving.

Drew,

Relax. Remember that we now have the left lane law. So that person was in error for the stopping. You were in error for throwing the cup. You both probably would have gotten a ticket for RR. Gun. Hmmm, brandishing is a bad thing. Not something you should do. What if you brandish, and he pulls a gun and shoots you? Please stay away from guns if that's what you think they are for.

For me, I just let folks in. Even if I am in a hurry, I'm not in that much of a hurry.

No sense in getting steamed, and wasting a Dr Pepper. I really try not to get into those situations because I realize that I have a 3 ton truck. Life is short, drive defensively and try to anticipate your moves and the others around you.

I guess we have different opinions. I don't see Road Rage in my commute. If I do it's *CSP on the cell phone.

I let the folks in a hurry just speed on by!

I too have been so pi$$ed off I could have easily rammed someone (with my Dodge Ram, get it?

), but for some reason I held back. Next time you're in that situation, just let him go.

The people I want to Whack sometimes are those who are behind me and impatient to pass around AFTER I have already given the proper pass signals and showed my intention to pass.

I started my pass one day and thank goodness I have good peripheral vision, I see this car right beside me in the left lane and we're neck to neck about 6" apart. I swerve back into the right lane and get behind the car I had intended to pass. Close shave at best. Later down the road some cop has him pulled over. My thoughts were, "I am glad the cops got to him first."

Some people are in such a hurry and with a disregard for safety just to get to their destination 15 seconds before the other guy.

A good friend of mine got into an altercation with an old Caddy. The Caddy pulled aside my friend and smashed into the side of him. My friend just cut his wheel toward and drove the guy iunto a ditch. Did I mention my friend was driving a dump truck. I didn't see it happen but I know this guy very well..I have no doubts

I got into a heavy brawl at busy intersection because these people were driving like idiots. It was 2 guys and 2 girls in the car and 3 in our car. My buddy yells out the window at them and the girl flips him the bird. The dudes started laughing at us, bad move. We pulled up beside them at the light and my buddy throws it into park. The passenger couldn't roll the window up fast enough and took 5 or 6 punches directly in the face. I was in the back seat of a 2 door accord and the passenger was passed out. So I couldn't get out easily. The managed to both get out of the car and were wailing on my buddy all while I was trying to get out of this matchbox. They had him against the back of our car kicking him. I finally got out by then and started beating the c.r.a.p out of the one guy that was built like a gorilla. All the time he kept trying to grab me to wrestle me down the punches prevented that. His buddy finally got off my friend and came after me and landed one right on the side of my head. The cops screeched behind us and in front. Evidently an unmarked cop saw the guy coming after me and nothing else so they ask us if we wanted to press charges against them for assault. Of course we said, "NO OFFICER THAT WON"T BE NECESSARY". We all went our bloody ways.

I had a bruise on the side of my head from the clocking to the side of head. My buddy almost broke his jaw.

Long story short avoid road rage at all costs!

I was following a "wide load" bulldozer/trailer out of town on a 2-lane, double yellow center lined road. Speed limit 40, rolling hills. Numb fellow in 4x4 Ford Ranger behind me. The dozer is having a slow time of things, cresting hills at 15mph. I'm taking it easy, knowing there's a passing zone where the speed limit goes to 50 and hills flatten out in 1/2 mile.

I brake halfway down a little hill to put distance between myself and the dozer so I can coast through the bottom of the hill and conserve momentum. BAM! Ranger is on my side. I'm immediately right back on the dozer's bumper. If the ranger is going to pass (illegally), he's going to pass both of us or fall back behind me and wait his turn. Oops, he yanks in front of me. I was seriously considering doing the PIT maneuver on his rear fender/bumper. Then he'd have to explain how he was going that direction in that lane. As he was jacked up and I was in a Saturn, his tailpipe would have just put a hole in my plastic; I know there's nothing structural on my car forward of the front tire for that sort of thing.

Besides, some self-preservation instinct kicked in.

I can only console myself by knowing he's paying more for gas.

tailgating seems to be pretty bad in this town. even on the interstate, speed limit is 65. I'm going 75 in the third lane out of three lanes, and people tailgate you so you move out of the way. I got tired of it so I slowed down to 65. this guy behind me got so infuriated, he honked his horn like a maniac, got a couple of birds, and cut me off. I need to get one of those clever bumper stickers that says "if you can read this, get off my azz"
lol.gif

I always move to let a guy pass on the left regardless of the speed I'm doing or he's doing. I figure the guy could possibly have an emergency like a preganant wife or sick child, etc., etc.

If he's just an a$$hole, I'll let the police deal with him.

If those impatient drivers would time themselves in both 'driving like an idiot' and 'driving in the same lane at or near the speed limit' modes they would find that the 'idiot' mode saves them very little time, usually between 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Not worth it to me.
Also, I get at least 20% better fuel mileage by driving steady using cruise controled rpm around 1900 (which is about 60mph).

What I would like is to have a spray setup near the trailer hitch on my truck that would dispense (on command) the smell of burning electrical wire.
The Tailgater behind me would think their electrical system is frying and would pull over.
Maybe a selector with different smells like skunk or vomit or rotting flesh.... heheh

Did I mention that I have 150db air horns?

Drew:

Don't take this as a slam, but I had a hard tim understanding your post. You stated that someone thought you cut them off got in font of you and brake checked you. You respond by 1) hitting his car with yours (even lightly), and 2) throwing something at him?

Sorry, but it appeared you were more the "rager" than him. Even if you didn't instigate it, you were just as wrong, if not more.

I too have a short temper and have had 3 roadside confrontations that I can think off, one resutling in a brawl. That was over 5 years ago. I have since realized that driving away isn't being a coward...it's being smart. Just a few months ago I exited off to get gas and had a car pull up beside me and a large angry man got out. I had no idea why, and didn't even remember seeing his car. He pened his trunk, fot what apeared to be a 3 iron out and had it pulled back and in a determined walk toward me. I just opened up my door, pulled my SIG P220 out and held it to my side. He wisely chose to get back in his Lincoln and drive off.

Story with an important lesson that changed my actions 5 years ago: Buddy was driving in downtown Atlanta. A car cut him off and exited. He followed them (3 in the car, he was solo) into a BAD neighborhood (read dumba**). The car got caught at a redlight and he (buddy) got out and approached the car and pulled the door open (read BIG DUMBA**). Next thing he knew he was standing there and the car sped off. Felt something wet on his belly. Looked down and saw blood draining from his stomach. He had been stabbed. Two surgeries, several pints of blood and 1/4 of his liver gone. Moral of the story...think...don't be stupid.

If the general public would learn to always yield the fast lane to those going faster than they are, NO MATTER HOW FAST THEY THEMSELVES ARE GOING, there would be A LOT less road rage. The roads would be safer too.

I don't care if you're going 120 mph, if I'm going 130, GIVE ME THE FAST LANE!!!

Let the other guy get to the cop first.

Scooby, good advice. Sometimes, I just can't hold myself back. If I had to explain the whole sequence of events that made this occur, it'd be long. But I say again, I did nothing wrong. Yea, I got in ahead of him or I would have missed my exit. I sat there for 30 seconds with my turn signal on with some hotrod behind me in the fastlane about to ride straight into my *** . There was enough room (at least 5 to 7 feet) and I took it. The funny thing about this, is I missed my exit anyway

I was behind a Sr. Citizen a posted low 45 on a fast road. Behind me comes a big red p/u who passes us both illegally blasting me with anti-skid rocks that pile up on the center line. He drove away fast, but I paced him and fantasized what would be his punishment. He had a FOP Member placard and I saw him pull into the Municipal parking lot. Shouldn't he know better? I am sometimes tempted to criminally "reduce the mobility" of a bad offender's car after they park it. In this case, I was offended the guy blasted us etc., but I pass on double yellow often...just on back roads and only if it will make a real difference in my ride. It is not illegal if you have 1000ft of clear vision. Farm equipment and over loaded vehicles are what the loophole was intended for, not Racer-X stuff.

If those drivers who like to dawdle, drive 5 under the limit, and leave 1/4 mile between them and the car in front of them (especially while driving side-by-side with a like-minded driver, ensuring that nobody can pass) would observe that they are indeed getting to every traffic light just as it turns red, and forcing every driver stuck behind them to do the same, they might conclude that perhaps leaving 1/4 mile between them and the vehicle in front isn't such a good idea based on the programming of the traffic signals.

The programming of many traffic signals, at least in most cities using modern, computerized traffic signals, is to "gap out" the intersection and turn red when a platoon of vehicles (ie, the vehicles they were 1/4 mile behind) has passed through it.

The government goes through the expense of synchronizing traffic signals to ensure smooth traffic flow, and all it takes is some ignorant, self-absorbed jerks to drive side-by-side, under the speed limit to screw it up.

Why is it that ignorant, self-absorbed jerks like to drive side-by-side, anyway?

Back in the dark days of the 55 MPH speed limit, I was doing some thinking about a 600 mile trip. Play it safe, drive 60 and it is 10 hours on the road. Rely on the CB and drive 75, and it is 8 hours. Well add a little more for those controlling, self righteous people who leave their cruise control set on 60, while passing a truck going 59. Don't tell me it is safer to spend 20 minutes beside a truck than to speed up a little.
