Buying 2 new tires makes it more likely that you will be buying tires in sets of two over the life of that vehicle. It tends to lock you into one model of tire, or leave you with different tire models on different axles, or of tossing a pair with life left at some point.
Mixing and matching might be fine on a family truckster, where it has been common practice for decades. But certain vehicles should have all 4 tires of the same model and tread condition. AWD and sports cars such as this one tend to fall into the latter group.
Buying one tire is a short term stopgap until the time comes to replace all four with a UHP set he likes.
But I think we've killed the horse on this one.
